I’ve been debating what tires to get for my 08 A4 Avant for months now and still can’t decide. I have winters on 16" wheels, so whatever tires I get for the 17" wheels don’t need to have any snow capability. I’ll be putting about 10k miles on the tires each year (5k on the winters) and it’ll be my regular commuting and long trip car.
I was originally all about getting a true set of summers, either Pirelli Zero Nero GT or Continental ExtremeContact Sports
.
After comparing treadwear ratings though, I’m starting to consider an ultra performance all season like the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3.
I want to get the most out of the A4 since it is a bit of a fun car, but also don’t want to put a higher performing tire on it than necessary if it’ll mean new tires every two years.
What does O ppo recommend? Can an all season perform close enough to a summe r tire in this scenario?
Picture of the wagon in its element for your time.

Treadwear rating of 300, any idea how they hold up long term?

Not so good from what I understand. But performance wise, fantastic

There was a lot of discussion of those sorts of tires on King T’Challa’s bootleg consumer reports tire ratings post:

Firestone Firehawk Indy 500s are fantastic. Stiff sidewalls, hybrid tread design, good treadwear, great dry grip, reasonable noise levels and good ride comfort.

Nokian ZLine A/S.
Inexpensive and good. Loved them on my old Volvo. I will be getting them for my new Volvo when the Pirelli Cintauro's wear out. The Pirelli are $350 each, Nokians are about $140 each.

The AS3's are perfect for you. Or Conti DWS, but those are slightly less sporty, and I think longer tread life. I run DWS's on my E55. Those are the only two tires I ever recommend. Everything else, in the all season category, is trash comparatively.

Is that Moro Blue? I have a 2005.5!
Anyway, I run Continental ExtremeContact DWS 06 tires and I’m more than satisfied with the level of grip. The steering rack and understeer spoil the fun much more. I’m on my second set and I haven’t found them to wear particularly quickly.
That said, the car will wear out the outer edge rather quickly under autocross or very spirited driving conditions. That’s the reason I ended up getting a second set in the first place. I’m on stock everything, dunno how that would be if you’re running suspension mods. If you plan on more than occasional track or even canyon time , I’d either step up to ExtremeContact Sports or get a third set of wheels.

Very nice, would have loved a blue one, but mines black on black. Tough to find anything not silver so I jumped on it when I could find a 6 speed . Yours a manual or auto?
DWS are a great tire, I used those for a winter on my Passat and they were very good. That's what makes me question if I'd be sacrificing summer performance.

Continental extreme contact D SW 06
BF Goodridge g-force comp 2 AS
Choose one.

Mine’s a manual as well :)
I don’t think you’ll be sacrificing any summer performance usable on the street. However, you won’t be as satisfied on the track or at autocross as with a good summer tire. I don’t think the stock B7 A4 chassis really warrants performance summer rubber, like I said.

A co-worker drives a 2007 A4 2.0T FSI and has Hankook Ventus Evo S1 or Primes mounted on 18" double spoke wheels. He's very satisfied with those but they rather wear out quick. I have 205/55 R16 Hankooks on my A3 and can only recommend those as well, they're a good bit stickier on the asphalt than my old Pirelli Cinturatos.
