No firsthand experience or knowledge. However based on what I’ve heard from people in the know. Get the best example you can afford. Make sure it has excellent service history, on time and every item that BMW recommends. No service history = no sale. Change oil twice as often as suggested, just to be safe. Use the best parts for the oil change that you can find, even if that means getting them from a dealer (online OE oil filters are not always the same as actual OE filters, i.e. Hengst/Mann vs. Mercedes). Sludging and filter clogging is a very real issue in modern diesels, particularly when you go over the service interval or use subpar parts.

Decent cars and drivetrain but the emissions stuff is were the car starts to have problems. Like catching on fire

Affordable.... that’s cute. German car, just out of warranty.... hmm I wonder why the price is so low ;). Don’t mind me, im not the best role model. Mine is a limited production 10 year old German car, with model specific parts.... so yeah, affordable ;). But as long as you know what you’re stepping into, go for it.

And yeah, service records are a must and cut the oil change, or rather all fluid change intervals in half.   Cheap insurance really.

Yea, I hadn’t looked into them at all, just noticed the prices. If the engines are as finicky as they sound I’ll pass.

It’s a dice roll. I’m not familiar with these in particular, but I’m sure there is plenty of info out there about them. It’s like anything, they all seem to have some fatal flaw, or two, or three. I mean the Audi V10s are prone to carbon on the intake valves, and lunching their timing chain guides, and breaking flaps in the intake manifold, and leaking oil from the valve covers that fail... but there are workarounds for most of that stuff. And just more frequent oil changes help a lot for the timing chain guides. The carbon still sucks, but now there are decent over the counter remedies that don’t involve pulling off the intake manifold to clean the intake valves. As for the other two, it’s a dice roll. Maybe it breaks, or leaks, and maybe it doesn’t. Time will tell. But for the time being it’s a treat to bounce it off the 7k rev limiter every so often.

You just have to go in eyes open, and if you like how they drive, then go for it.

If I tell you it needs a carbon cleaning (including valve cover replacement because the lower intake ports are part of the plastic valve cover) , an EGR valve, injectors, and glow plugs (with module) , and it will cost $4,000+ , what do you say?

From what I’ve heard, the emissions stuff is finiky as hell. Make sure its been maintained properly and bypass the EGR so that you dont experience carbon buildup (if your state does not test for emsissions )

From the other comments this “passing thought” probably is going to remain just that.
