After two months of tension and contract negotiations involving federal mediators, my labor union has called a strike. I spent the rest of my scheduled shift picketing with my coworkers.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Any northeast Oppos are probably at least somewhat aware of what’s been going on. Our labor contract was up in February and the proposal the company wanted the union to ratify involved cuts to our pensions, healthcare benefits, pay raises, and more, that the company claims are necessary despite reporting $2 billion in profits last year.
The union has not been greedy during all this. They have simply been fighting to renew our current contra ct as-is.
Heading into the easter holiday, the loss of 31k workers is intended to be a big blow to the company and hopefully that will make them capitulate by the end of the week.

My wife’s family is in Boston, so I’m super familiar with Stop & Shop. Hopefully your union and they will be able to come to a fair agreement.

Best of luck! I mostly shop at Market Basket so sadly refusing to shop at Stop & Shop during the strike doesn’t mean much.

Here's hoping you get a fair deal. Corporate should be ashamed of themselves for even trying to pull that kind of crap. They aren't, but they should be.

I worked at a Stop & Shop when I was in college. Man, was it terrible. Pay was crap, union was crap, job was crap.

Jesusfuckingshit, burn the place to the ground.
$2B in profits and they wouldn’t agree to as-is? Only appropriate response is to say “that’s off the table now. Give us more or we involve the Teamsters as well.”

Our truck drivers are Teamsters and they are striking out of solidarity

I think I found your problem. Teamsters drive horses. Modern semi-trucks with engines are far more cost-effective.

I have a union related question. When the decision to strike is made, is it organizationally expected/required to picket with your crew? Do some people go home at that point? I’ve never been part of a union and I don’t know what they do once that kind of plan is locked in.

All the local chapters met last week individually to vote on whether to authorize a strike if it came to that. Our chapter was unanimous, and the other four were also or near.
We are not required to picket. It’s strongly encouraged but we wouldn’t be penalized if we elect not to. We can however be fined by the union if we cross the line.

Ugh good luck man.

Stop them from getting any stock, they’ll fold real quick.
(Sigh. We both know they won’t. They’ll say their last-best is off the table and here’s even-worse because a half day of striking cost them $56 bazillion dollars.)

For the uninitiated (like me) cross the line means go back to work, right?

Yes.

The public so far has been very much in favor of the workers. We’ve been instructi ng anyone who offers support to call the company and complain to put pressure on them.

Yeah, but, that’s the world we live in. “Fuck the people, fuck the public, shareholder value!! That’s what the ‘law’ says!!”

Do you get extra pay for going out? I don’t recall my union striking during the time I was with it, but I vaguely report there being an extra stipend. Can you collect unemployment?

They can’t afford to say “fuck the public”. It’s a g rocery s to re. T he public is where all their income comes from.

The union does offer strike pay if it goes on longer than a week. Don't recall what it was tho.
