I was indeed close by, but the cheapest gas I’ve seen anywhere in the Bay Area while here was $3.799. At the gas station by  my hotel in the eastern suburbs it was $4.149.  I did go into the actual Oakland for a bit.  Didn’t get shot or mugged.  Did see some sketchy characters hanging around.

I think it was $11/gallon here. And yeah it goes “needle just below full, we charged you for a quarter tank which is 8 gallons.” “This compact has a 6 gallon tank.” “Our system says it is a full size and  holds 32 have a nice day sir.”

I maintain that fuel prices should be a lot higher across the board, but that does seem high (my last fill up was $3/gallon for premium).

$6/gallon is expensive. Then again, I can drive over 500 miles and still be in California. FWIW... But the relative vastness of the U.S. is a different thing than Europe.

Gotcha. My local, reasonably priced shell just went up this morning (or last night) and crossed $4 for regular. Diesel was hovering around $ 3.50 but went to over $ 4 this month too.

Luckily I only need to fill up the VW about once a month, and I haven’t driven the 348 in a while so my fuel bill has been low. I need to take the 348 out of hibernation so that will probably double or triple my monthly fuel bill lol

Yeah, did it a year early because the water pump was leaking. I had the money saved so it wasn’t the end of the world. The shop did a lot of “while you are in there stuff” and fixed a lot of things that were done improperly so I’m sort of glad I did it early, even though my maintenance fund has still not recovered. Oh well, I think I’m going to do it myself the next time, in 5 years. Even if I don’t, the service should be about half the cost since I was proactive on so many things this time. Hopefully.

I have a friend who is a computational scientist with a couple of PHds who works designing pumps for the fracking industry. Finite element analysis and such. They are a family of geniuses. Amazing people, brilliant and funny and caring and very warm.

Oh nice! I wish I did more CFD. I do low energy stuff and a lot of brewery applications so CFD/FEA isn’t super important. Back when I was in oil and gas, working with pumps in the thousands of HP range, efficiency and strength were much more important lol.

They don’t happen to work for Halliburton, do they? I never did anything with fracking, but I am familiar with boosting well production .
