You guys ready? Here’s my Tesla hot take. Tesla claims to be Saving The Planet With Electric Cars, despite said vehicles being an ineffective use of raw materials to achieve that end, and effectively get 50-60 MPG when you account for losses in producing electricity at fossil fuel plants, which is still the case for 81% of ALL US energy production. What Tesla actually produces is a status symbol for the rich who want to stroke their ego.
This explains why the Model 3 is bad, something echoed in many reviews. It is marketed as a mass market EV, but still sees somewhat limited production and only exists in reality in higher trim levels, and yet has the same interior amenities as a well-equipped mid-2000s Honda Civic while getting only slightly better effective fuel economy. Further, despite being an ostensibly plebian vehicle, it still comes with very patrician features, such as an all-glass roof (which is the worst of both normal roofs and convertibles) and hardware to support an autonomous driving system that is ineffective at best, dangerous at worst.
So yeah. Fuck Tesla, fuck Elon, and fuck Tesla fanboys. You’re not helping save the planet, all you’re doing is pushing out more cheap status symbols that will be worth a few thousand dollars at most in a decade.

Model 3s are tremendously common here as well.

The rents and home prices here truly are insane. It’s been super frustrating working with our team out here because all the good people get sick of living in studio apartments on six figure salaries and bail.

Makes sense they would be up there too with the combination of higher than US average gas prices, lots of wealth, and general environment-friendly mindset of the PNW. They are actually pretty common where I live in Northern New Mexico as well but nothing like the Bay Area. I could hardly throw a rock in a parking lot here with hitting a Model 3. But have gotten used to them to the point it’s weird when I see posts here from the Midwest where someone is excited to see one because they are new and uncommon there.

It's OK. I feel the same way about Lexus, Mercedes-Benz and BMW...

One or two. This is suburban Oakland. The BMW 3-series is the default sedan here. Probably 10 or more for every one Camry on the road. The Model 3 seems to be catching up quickly though.

And don’t forget that HR refused to offer them a salary that would even be competitive in, say, East Cleveland.
No, I’m not joking. That’s their default tactic.

That’s true in a lot of industries here unfortunately. The salaries of our engineers at this site would be competitive a lot of places and plenty to live a decent lifestyle back at my site but it’s just not enough in the East Bay. The site operating contractor is kinda stuck though because the Federal Government seems to think engineers all over the US all make the same thing. The contractor can play some games to get their engineers more money and they do make more than ours on average but houses here are 3x the price of northern NM and the salaries certainly aren’t 3x.

I am not a Tesla fanboy or hater, but Jalopnik seems to run a lot of "the sky is falling on Model 3 production/sales stories. I don't know what projections are being met or what are not, but there are sure a lot of the mouthless wonders out there even in my small Midwestern trucks and SUVs kind of town.

Lol mouthless wonders. Something I’ve noticed here in CA: they look truly awful with front plates. We don’t have front plates in NM so it didn’t really occur to me how much different they would look with them on until I saw them here.

It’s downright hilarious (all the sarcasm, yes) when that shit comes from companies like Apple, LinkedIn, Google, and Failbook. Who also normalized it. Then whine about all the broken down, rotting 1960's RVs parked on the street near their campus.

I’m seeing quite a few around me, which is pretty interesting considering you can’t sell them in MI and have to drive down to Ohio to pick it up. Lot of work for a “35k” sedan.
