This big girl appeared in my back yard tonight! They are the largest North American moth.
Super neat!

I remember seeing one of those on the porch more than 40 years ago, that’s how much of an impression it made on me. Seemed like it was big as a dinner plate.

This one is wider than both of my hands put together. I’ve never seen a bigger moth.

These don’t have mouth parts or a digestive system. They die within two weeks of metamorphosis because they can’t eat. They couldn’t harm you if they tried.

Man every time I try to take a picture of a butterfly or moth they fly away. How’d you get it to land on your hand?

It had either just metamorphosed or it was at the end of its life. Either way, it couldn’t fly. Given how fat it was, I’m betting it overwintered in our pecan tree and just came out of its cocoon . I just scooped it up off the lawn, took some pics, showed the kids, then placed it in our backyard fort where it could do its thing without being harassed by our dogs or an owl.
