I’m sprucing up my Rocky Mountain Spice from eons ago; 2001.. getting it back into shape to keep up to my kidlets and their newfangled
bikes..
Not mine, but same same..
First step was take off the Ritchey clipless pedals and get some flats for jumping on and off 100x.. Some RF Chesters fit the bill;
Next up tires, I still had originals on there with cracking sidewalls and all little 1.9 cross country things.. Nothing like what is at the shop these days. I went with some Maxxis DHF front and back in 2.5
Now, here was a hiccup - my shipment came in from ChainReaction in UK and I opened the box to find these;
!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , whoops.. I picture a lycra roadie opening their box to find a pair of Maxxis just as confused as I was.. It’s all sorted and a new shipment is headed my way.
So for a quick $150 or so my old bike is back in action. Let’s see how it does before I start shopping for a new bike.
Right now I need to figure out how to carry 4 bikes at once, last weekend we had three in the canopy and it was full.. Looking at the Yakima Holdup and the Thule T2 right now..

Chesters are great but they sure are shin shredders, so watch out for that. I have a nice scar with no nerve endings in it because of those.
I’m gonna super suggest the 1Up-
USA rack. I just got one and am going to do an Oppo mini review on it next time I go out.
I really like mine because:
Its all aluminum, so no plastic to break or wear out, and no steel so it won’t rust.
The aluminum is all milled so its super strong (con: its also
heavy, but not anywhere near as heavy as my buddy’s kuat
)
It folds up fairly compact so I can fit it in my trunk easily
extremely easy to put on/take off my car, and its very easy to load bikes on/take bikes off
It can fold up compact against the bumper and if you purchase the locks its fairly secure. a lot of people leave them on their cars full time.
1Up as a company seems to really stand by their product, as observed from comments by other 1Up customers.

I rode my late 90's cannondale hardtail for a summer before buying a new (at the time) Trek full-suspension 29er.
Also looking at putting a hitch on our Volvo to get a rack for it. The roof rack I have now works fine for full-sized mt. bikes, but not so much for the kids.
My next project, though, is building a natural pump-track-style trail in the woods for them. I can’t wait for the goddamn snow to melt, but unfortunately it snowed most of the last two days.

That Rocky mountain was a very nice bike back in the day, however the new bikes are just so much better in every way except weight. I
f you get serious again about ridding
I’d just go buy a 29er dual suspension bike
like a stump jumper or similar trek, or whatever your LBS sells.

You just reminded me I need to contact santa cruz. I have the OG blur (2002) and I was hoping they would sell me the parts to convert it to a blur LT so I could fit wider tires. Here’s hoping.

That price up front hurts though, especially for a nice Canadian like myself..
I like the look of the NorthShore racks but I’ve heard they are hard to load, scratch up bikes, and can drop bikes as well. .

I’ve been to a couple of our LBS and have drooled over some new bikes- I’ve been away so long that I have to start learning all over pretty much.. Seems like there aren’t as many bike companies, I see Norco, Rocky, Specialized, Yeti, Trek, and Giant.. that’s about it..
I’ve looked around pinkbike too - but don’t recognize much..

I’ve had north shore racks recommended before. I’ve never heard anything negative though.
The ones you’re looking at should be good quality, I’ve never heard anything bad about Thule, and you might check out rockymounts as well, as they were recently recommended to me and they seem to be great quality.
I will say this though , I’ve spent nearly 1,300 American buckaroos on bike carrying solutions because I didn’t want to spend a lot up front.
I’ve done seasuckers, then gave up on those and installed a hitch and bought a cheaper hitch rack that broke but I got sent a free replacement...that has already shown some serious signs of wear, and thus I bought the 1up.

I agree completely with the buy once plan. I also appreciate well made things and smaller fabricators..
Looking around the forums I’ve seen
again and again that 1up is the final asnwer.

There are almost too many choices. I can see how it is confusing.

Trail, enduro, all mountain, gravel, 29, 27, 26 etc etc... Plus the ‘decent’ bike price has shifted up a few thousand $$..
I need to get a feeling of how much biking is going to be part of the family, right now it seems like a lot more than likely;

If you take the topper off you could do the rear gate pad thing, then you don’t have to spend $500 on a rack.

1. Trail 120-140 mm travel
2. 29er without a doubt
3. Aluminum frame, carbon if you can afford it.
4. You will probably spend $2500-$45
00 on a new bike, $1500-$3000 used.

I would argue against the 29er. Just because I love the agility of 27.5. 29 is a lot on tight switchbacks.

I’m going to pick up a Loloracks 6 bike hitch mount rack this weekend. The hold up is great. I've got a buddy with one who's used it for years without issue.

Making me miss my Element Race. It looked really similar to that, also a 2001 I think.

Or, if you're an average rider, how to go OTB!
