They can’t. There’s too much construction going on at night for anyone to sleep. Vroom vroom go the trucks. Beep beep go the back up alarms. Bang bang go all the heavy equipment. Woo woo go the sirens. Honk honk go all the drivers who are blocked by anything and everything all freaking night long....

I need to find some earplugs if I want to sleep tonight.

LoL visiting NYC from the ‘burbs I see.

I visit it family in Manhattan regularly . Honestly it’s not bad on weekends, plus I guess the higher up you go the quieter it gets . Get some white noise or a fan going and yeah earplugs will help.

It’s nice to visit, lot of things to do but I will never live there and I hate driving there . Give me small town peace & quiet and lack of gridlocked traffic any day.

I travel with foam plugs in my bag. Not so much for this as for noisy hotels.

When my wife and I started dating, she lived in an apartment in Boston on a busy intersection. Cool corner apartment, except... down the street one way was a hospital. And a police station. And this was a major intersection. Up the other direction was a big fire station too. Sirens. So many sirens. All the time. On top of the regular city noise.

I lived in a house that was absolutely dead silent at night, up in New Hampshire. When I came to visit, I hardly slept.

People would see me at work the next day and say something suggestive like, “oh, I know why YOU’RE tired...” but umm while they weren’t wrong, it was mostly because I was woken up every 15-30 minutes.

I hated that apartment. I went there often. And somehow I convinced her to move up here.

Of all the major world class cities I've visited.  Berlin is the only one I could actually see myself living in.

It all depends on how high up you can get. I did some work in the penthouse of a building that was just dwarfing everything around it. There was such a silence that you could probably hear a pin drop. So other than earplugs you probably need to drop about 30 million to get the silence you are looking for.

I don’t know the difference between the sirens on NYC fire trucks, ambulances, and police cars, so perhaps there were fire trucks? Maybe it was some jackass with a megaphone pretending to be a fire truck. Who knows?

Whenever I visit my cousins and spend the night in Columbus I don’t get much sleep, and they live on a quiet back street. The sky though! He sky should not glow incandescent yellow all night long. There is no night. I live in the country so when the lights are out the stars and moon are the only light you got. I actually can’t even sleep well when it’s a full moon either.

LOL just imagining some dude in boxers and undershirt standing in the yard,  at night, with a megaphone to his mouth yelling “wee woo wee woo wee wooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!” As loud as he can into it.

what part of NYC? I lived in Manhattan for several years... one of my places was facing inwards. Not a good view of much but quiet!

The only two that really bugged me were the horns (there’s a reason the taxi of tomorrow includes a “horn accountability light”, though I imagine enforcement is weak, and cabbies probably immediately disconnect it), and the construction (but only because it was happening in my own building, converting some offices into a private school).

I will say that living in NYC gave me strong feelings about noise pollution, especially from cars, being a real problem. I can sleep through the rumble of the city, but it was definitely there (it was amazing what my noise cancelling headphones could do).

Brighton, Chestnut Hill ave / Washington St. intersection. St. Elizabeth’s medical is right there, and two fire stations are nearby (one on each of the cross streets) so they came through that intersection on their way to lots of calls. Police just up the street on Washington. I guess that’s not unique to a city, but being on that corner was... special.

And don’t forget the hookers calling your hotel room in the middle of the night trolling for business.

It’s very much a cultural thing. I think Vision Zero is important, but if I were running NYPD, I think I’d still be diverting money from speed and red-light cams to camera/microphone systems that would allow automatic fining I people who honk for no reason.

You got called by a hooker while having a job interview at 2am in NYC?

Haha!  Sorry, l et me explain.

I was asleep in my hotel on Manhattan before an interview at Hunter College the next day. I was awakened by a call from the front desk from someone I didn’t know. I was half asleep and got rid of them. A while later, I got a call from hotel security asking me if I had had a guest. I was confused and groggy and brushed it off. I can’t even remember how the conversation went.

I learned the next day that hookers looking for a gig would sometimes call a room from the front desk of a hotel (because the hotel security keeps them from going up) and troll for “company” to see if somebody would take them up on it.

*takes puff out of my crack pipe*

So... let me see if I understand this right... You were asleep and the hooker shows up for a surprise interview for the position of ‘Regional Boyfriend/Pimp - Hunter College Office’.

But because you were groggy and tired, you sent her away, missed the interview and didn’t get the job.

Right?

RIGHT?
