It’s too crowded, it’s too noisy, a $7.39 burger is barely bigger than a slider, they put a mayo-based sauce on the burger, and “large” coke which is the size of a medium anywhere else cost me $3.
The room is slightly larger than the bed. How do people live like this?

No. Shack Shake is awful, but they sell beer. One of my bestie coworkers and I used to have a code phrase “want to get lunch at Shake Shack?” which meant “want to maybe get a burger but definitely get drunk at noon on a Tuesday and then go back to work?”

I was disappointed. The “sauce” was wrong and the burger, although well cooked and tasty, was ridiculously small, especially for the price.

To be fair, 34th street is garbage. Just keep in mind that most of those crowds you’re encountering are people who actually chose to take a vacation to New York.

I went to NYC to visit a friend once. Stayed at their place which was more or less outside the city proper yet still in the city enough to take the subway. This was.. god, near to 20 years ago now.
You can take cold, bitter, hungry comfort in the knowledge that San Francisco is even fucking worse . Because those assholes shut down anything resembling a bus at 10PM sharp.

When I was here after Sandy, I learned how navigate like a local. As soon as I cleared Penn Station, I was already cursing the tourists. First set of tourists I saw were getting pissed because people wouldn’t stop walking between them (two ladies) and the girl trying to take their picture.
After that, the crowds just got worse and most of them don’t know how to move smoothly, so they just keep creating roadblocks. I really wanted to just start pushing them into the street.

I LOVE NYC!!!
And how much more space do you need? Looks like a decent sized hotel room by Big City standards.
When I was there, I didn’t go for burgers. I went to places like this:
There should be a kiosk for this place at Times Square. They used to have more locations when I was there, but since then, the company went through a bankruptcy because their CF
O was an idiot.
But generally I would find interesting places to eat in
Hells Kitchen...

My office is just 2 blocks from there. If you want real meat go to any of the old school steakhouses of which there are quite a few peppered around you. The reason everything is more expensive is because y ou pay for convenience and their rent. I feel the same way about the crowds and noise. Its why I like many other people just commute in. You get to enjoy the hustle and bustle when you want but you get to relax and sleep in peace.

Ehh that sounds like a description of every major city. I’ve got plenty of complaints about NYC ranging from the smells of hot garbage in the summer to the frigid cold in the winter. But regardless of price, there is access to some awesome food and cool places off the beaten tourist path. In general I do not like urban areas but at least NYC has public transit that “works” and you can find everything you need so long as you got the $$$.

Even if you don’t smoke, walk down the sidewalk with a lit cigarette held about five inches from your side. It’ll keep the tourists away.

There’s a ton of fun free or almost free stuff to do in NYC even a lot of really cheap delicious eats if you know where to look.
The internet ruined suggested donation at The Met though and I bet the natural history museum is next.
But the Staten island ferry is still free and has cheap beers.

I’ll be looking for a place for dinner tomorrow. Recommendations?
Our office used to right across the street from Madison Square Gardens and there was a FANTASTIC restaurant downstairs with the best Reuben I’ve ever eaten. They’re remodeling the building and the restaurant is gone. That was the one thing I was looking forward to on this trip.

I don’t fault anyone else who enjoys it. Obviously many do. It’s just not for me as a place to live. As a tourist though, I would definitely map out those cheap places to eat and do stuff. And the museums would be top of my list.

Well yeah ive never gone on vacation to NYC haha. I could imagine being in a wheelchair would be a nightmare in that city. Or lugging around children or anything at all really. Every time I go with a mission, move with a purpose, travel lightly, and plan for eveyrthing to go wrong.

I loved going to college there, what you experienced is normal of any city someone is unfamiliar with. It takes times to figure out how to live there and be happy, and it isn’t for everyone. *none of these lessons apply to Las Vegas. I have spent 6 months here on and off during every season. I can't find a thing that city offers that is unique.

General rule is get out of midtown if you can. Two blocks south of where you are is several blocks worth of Korean restaurants. Not as cheap as they used to be, but plenty of tasty options. Or, walk a couple blocks uptown and ride the 7 train to pretty much any country you want to visit. End of the line is a Chinatown mall with a food court straight out of Asia, where you can eat your fill for under $20. Stop by and see the Unisphere and NYC diorama at the Queens Museum on the way back. If that’s too far, there are a couple of excellent dumpling/noodle places on 8th Ave ... try Kung Fu between 48th and 49th.

If you’re doing the classic NY steak thing, Keens is right around the corner from you on 36th. Not cheap, but everything is excellent. You will never have a mutton chop like theirs. At least drop by the bar. Really, this place is one of the greats.

When Ben picked me up from EWR to get my Corvette, I got to see NYC from Newark. That’s about as close as I ever really care to be. I saw Freedom Tower, the Empire State building, and the Statue of Liberty, that’s all I needed.

Sure, there are lots of different options depending what you are in the mood for
Steakhouses:like I mentioned earlier (pricy but definitely worth the $$$),
Keen’s, Frankie & Johnnie’s, Gallaghers
Italian:These places are more reasonably priced compared to the steakhouses but also very good.
Lugo Cucina, Trattoria Trecolori, Daniela Trattoria, Tony’s Di Napoli
Korean: Han Bat (their hot bowls are a godsend when it is really cold out)
Bar/Pub: The Keg Room, Stout, O’Reilly’s Pub, American Whiskey, Pennsylvania 6
ZHP Sparky, the 5th

LOL I was thinking “this guy should definitely never visit Japan” after seeing the picture of the room he was complaining about. Seems about what I’d expect from any major city, really.
If you had to run a business with the real estate prices they have to deal with you’d be making the exact same decisions – because at the end of the day nobody is going to want to pay $900 a night for that exact same room but mid-western floor space – especially given how little time folks visiting a major city will actually be spending IN the room.
If you’re in your hotel room ordering room service and watching TV in bed you’re already doing it all wrong.
