London is introducing an Ultra Low Emission Zone which charges petrol cars that don’t meet at least Euro 4 emissions standards and diesels that don’t meet the much later Euro 6 (because we have to demonise diesels now). As a rule of thumb, you’ll need a petrol car made after about 2005 or a diesel made after about 2015. An !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! is provided so that you can see if you can drive in without being charged.
That gave me an idea. My car was first sold in London and I know its previous UK number. Would it be exempt if it were still there?
Indeed it would.

worrying about emissions seems a little pointless in a country that loves its currys

Well now that you’ve doxxed you car, I’ve looked up its MOT history. Sadly not very interesting, a burnt out bulb, some headlight misalignment problems, and a non-functional horn, all of which look to have been fixed at some point.

I wished we had more strict enviromental standards; even draconian ones. I’d happily leave my car home twice or thrice a week if I needed to as long as they reduced congestion and pollution

If you want some real lulz...
A 2002 Buick Regal GSE (or similar with 3800 Series II supercharged) would not be subject to the charge. Yep. That engine is certified ULEV. In 2004+ it’s SULEV.
Also not penalized?
2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee 3.0 CRD Overland
2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 with 6.4

Been there, done that! The mileage between each test is interesting, varying from 17,000 odd to about 800 as I
recall.

That seems like a cheaper method than buying a newer car....

There’s certainly a Subaru joke here somewhere.

I’m not a fan of just banning things, but it seems good to require the worst polluters to pay more (this is regressive so there would need to be a way to lessen the blow). Either way, it’s important that the pollution is a serious public health issue beyond just being a quality of life issue.

If I were mayor of this city, I’d make the cover of CityLab every week, with my draconian regulations. The official motto of the city would be “four wheels bad”

London’s Ultra Low Emission Zone =/= California’s Ultra Low Emission Vehicle category
A 2002 Buick Regal GSE
would
not
be subject to the charge
So, not quite. The two standards of low emissions aren’t the same.

Incorrect.
The L67 meets Federal LEV (MY2000 ) and California ULEV (MY2000 and MY2004+ .) It could not be classified Euro 4 because there was no Euro 4 at the time . Per CA that is an NMOG of <0.020, CO of <0.85, NOx of <0.1, HCN O of 0.008 per mile.
That’s not just Euro 4, that’s approaching Euro 5a.
