"E90M3" (e90m3)

I had just opened my wine and was getting ready to cook dinner when I realized I forgot peas. Not a big deal, I live half a mile from a whole paycheck, I’ll just go there real quick. That won’t give the M3 time to get warm, so I’m taking the 3. I remembered I never put the M3 on the battery tender, !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . Grab the keys to the M3, since it has the garage key on it and the spare key to the 3.
After I get the M3 on the tender, I walk over to the 3. I get in and start it up and up pops this warning:
Now one difference between my E9Xs is that the M3 has comfort access and the 328i does not. This means the keys are slightly different. The M3 key, on the left, has a place to put a battery in. The 3, on the right, does not.
I’ve changed the M3 key battery before, I’ve even got a spare battery in my apartment. !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , whatever the hell that is; I am by no means an electrical engineer, I barely passed physics II the summer before my fifth year.
Guess I might need to change up keys or something for a little and let my second key charge.

Yes just switch the keys everyother time you drive
that’ll fixit.

Induction works by using a magnetic field to build up electronic potential energy (aka voltage). Instead of using a cord (like a normal charger), you use a magnetic field.
Also not an electrical engineer, but I have taught physics a few times.

If you have the rechargeable battery, a wireless phone/watch charger might even do it.

Yep drive with that key more often. Wife's mini did this. The radio presets were on the key so she never wanted to use the one with my stations...

You could try rubbing the key on your pants for a few minutes....

The duality of electromagnetism: an electric current creates a magnetic field, and a changing magnetic field induces a current.

Ah yes, it seems like leaving physicsII for the very last semester is something that happens across the world
I suspect there’s a wireless charger affair in the fob-hole that starts charging it immediately; even if there’s no contact and the housing is plastic; the battery is small enough that you don’t actually need a very strong field to charge it.

The presets are annoying, luckily I don’t have electric seats so I won’t notice most of the presets.

It shouldn’t though...

It was only a pre- requirement for one class for me, which was Physical Chemisty II, which I did take my last semester.

My physics II class was filled with chemical engineers on their lasts semesters... I don’t think physics II actually opens any courses for them

So your post made me check, my F10 fob uses a traditional battery. It’s wild that BMW used wireless charging so long ago.

FCA has been using it for at least a decade now

Yes but only for cars without the comfort access package, since you had to put you key in the dash to start the car. Since my M3 has comfort access, it has a battery. Additionally , F10 production started for the 2011 MY, same as my M3.

Random side question. Do you have good luck locking your M3 touching the top of the handle? It takes me 5 or more attempts sometimes. I usually give up and just use the fob. Maybe the battery in the fob is too weak to be recognized in my pocket?

Put it on the charger for your electric tooth brush.

Unless it’s really hot out and has been in direct sunlight, I usually have no issue locking or unlocking it. The only time I had an issue was when it said my battery was low and turned off comfort access ; the tender has since rectified that. It’ll tell you if either your key fob or car battery is low. Unless you’re doing it wrong, which it sounds like you do know where to put your hand, I’m at a loss. The battery is really easy and inexpensive to change, if you want to give that a go.

Sadly no, I just got a Trader Joes Bordeaux. I was anxious to get home to play some video games with a friend.

Similar tech, but the fob is old enough it won’t be using anything standardized, and the standards based chargers won’t turn up their output unless a compliant device is there (so they don’t randomly set stuff on fire).

Fair point. I just think of any car with that sort of tech as being brand new which they kinda are compared to a 20 year old car.

there’s gotta be a way to pull it apart otherwise you might have to buy a new key, like GM did with 04-06 Pontiac GTO (key battery is tack welded in to the key head)
