Didn't we have a post about a son-in-law/daughter's boyfriend attempting to wrench recently?

It seems to be spreading.

Kinja'd!!!

I wonder what symptoms the car presented to make it seem that it needed a clutch. I’m not familiar with these cars, so I can’t determine how it should’ve been repaired, if indeed it needed work.

PSA: Don’t let your son-in-law/daughter’s boyfriend work on your car.

“ started to do clutch”

Ie had no idea what the fuck he was doing but took the car apart anyways.

Which is exactly what happened to that other Oppo - IIRC the idiot removed the camshafts from a Mini because reasons.

My girlfriend’s dad probably feels the same way with me. Thankfully, I’ll only be doing stuff to my car, not hers.

Without numbering the rockers iirc which really killed it.

Yeah, I got the impression the dummy had a pile of parts with no labels.

That’s why I only diagnose what’s wrong with my girlfriend’s car, not fix it.

I actually just got a free 2003 9-3, so I was really interested until I saw this isn’t yours and it’s in PA.

I’ve never rebuilt or torn down an engine, what’s the reason for needing to label the rockers? Do they each wear differently?

It’s actually a few miles from my house. If it weren’t for the “started to do clutch” bit I'd have maybe considered it.

Mine was given to me as saying “the clutch is going out”, which then changed to “it pops out of first gear”, which changed to “I took apart the shifter and when I was putting it back together I might not have adjusted the linkage correctly.”

Yes, they do wear differently and if you mix and match them, then each valve will open just a tiny amount more or less. Less if fine, but more may mean that it will hit the piston. Same thing with pushrods.

The rod bearings need to be matched as well. That is for oil circulation purposes afaik. The bearings are made as a single hollow cylinder and cut is half . Thus each pair of bearings have a different cut surface.

Rare 5 cylinder model. Hopefully that was a typo and the owner doesn't think it has 5 cylinders.
