If they take an Ecoboost Mustang and make essentially an ST version by putting performance package parts on it or even GT350 parts, that’d be a pretty freaking cool car.

A Mustang ST seems like a no brainer.

I feel like that’s what the Bullit is. Not quite a Shelby/Ford Performance product, but better than yout average Mustang.

Don’t get me wrong, ecoboost with gt350 parts be awesome. The problem for me is that it will be priced similar to very well equipped GT. Most buyers will see that 4 cylinder Mustang costs the same as a V8 Mustang. They will buy the V8, not the in line 4. On top of that you could find an used Voo doo gt350 now for what Ford will ask for the ecoboost gt350.

So you mean what I’ve mostly  already done to my Mustang.

it would be a real shame if we never got a hotted up EB 3.5 version... I’m sure there are a few left over from Lincoln or Raptors lying around...

The 3.5EB cut into the Coyote sales. Ford could treat it as mid point between the 2.3EB & Coyote . Give it 400hp so slots between the 2 other engines well.

Ah, the 3.5 is a great point! That's is the elephant in the room for them isn't it? A 3.5 Mustang could beat a GT Mustang easily, but is that why they won't do it?

I think the two would be comparable. The mustang already makes more power than the Raptor’s 3.5l (bullitt) . It may lose out on torque, but it has better top end and doesn’t fall off high up.

People like to bring up tuning with the EcoBoost, but it’s worth mentioning that the 3.5 high output makes about 46 0whp with a tune while people have made nearly as much with a tune only 18+ 5.0.

The 3.5l EcoBoost is a fantastic engine, but so is the current coyote and I'm not sure you'd see a significant difference between the two - GT excluded of course.

I really wouldn’t mind an EB Mustang for a daily driver. I probably won’t go that route, but I could certainly do much worse.

The only way you would get me into buying a new Mustang is if it came with the Barra turbo six engine ....

Or the 2.0 litre TDI from the Ranger .

I don’t think the EB V6s can fit in the current Mustang. Eyeballing it, the drivers side turbo and the steering shaft would try to occupy the same space at the same time.

Give it the 3.0 then. It would slot perfectly in between the 2.3 and the 5.0.

Look, if you want the best cheap track Mustang out of the Ford parts bin:

- 3.0 EcoBoost 400HP, 400ft/lbs tune from Lincoln Continental
EB3.5 is just as heavy as Coyote at 500lbs+ ; 3.0 is 50lbs lighter
- Delete rear seats completely
- GT350R   rear axle
- GT350 Track Pack shocks
- Partial GT350R chassis bracing
- Standard GT brakes (iron rotors)
- Manual transmission only
- Delete fog lamps, delete ‘MyColor’ crap, delete heated mirrors, delete remote start, delete parking sensors, delete ‘active valve’ exhaust
- Include backup camera (req’d,) TrackApps, GT350R rear spoiler, GT350 front splitter (the plastic one)
- B lack cloth interior only, no wheel options (19" only,) Recaro seats
- Only Option: “do you want Sync3?”
- Colors limited to Shadow Black, Oxford White, Performance Blue, Race Red

Call it the Mustang CS (Club Spec or Club Shelby ,) build to be competitive with Corvette Grand Sport (Z07 optioned) and more handling than the GT w/Level 2 , homologate as a zero-mod setup, and price it at $40 -44 k. Offer a factory bolt-in cage at $2k and explicit warranty coverage for track use.

Makes it half the price of the Grand Sport, cheaper than the GT Level 2, and competitive with a Miata Spec in cost. It’s still usable for a daily. It’s got a warranty, reducing running costs. It’s got good power, but not enough to out-shine the 5.0. Resulting in the perfect ‘next step up’ car, and making the GT350R ($70k) the obvious next rung.

That would be awesome! It's the perfect alternative to the regular GT!

Unfortunately what you described sounds more like a 49k entry. Which still isn’t bad.

Yep, and at that cost, with a focus on handling over raw power, it’s a very logical ‘next step’ for Spec Miata guys. You’re doubling the horsepower, and a lot more weight, but in a chassis that’s similarly handling focused. Not only that, but it should be  a fairly profitable car, because it’s all parts-binned.

No way. Run the numbers again, my friend.

The GT350R rear axle only means it gets adjustable links. GT350 also gets the ‘cheap’ shocks , meaning, non-electronic. Otherwise, you’re talking about an EcoBoost ($24k,) with base GT ($35k) brakes, and well over a thousand bucks of c ost deletion. LED fogs? Ain’t cheap. Nor are fancy mirrors or having to deal with 12 different paint colors and 30 different wheels.

The 3.0 EcoBoost also comes in the Lincoln MKZ and Aviator, as well as the Explorer Limited and Explorer ST . So you’ve got serious economies of scale going on as well as well as shared knowledge.

End result is that if we assume Ford makes $2k on the base EB and $4k on the GT, the margin on the hypothetical CS would be around $6-7k at the proposed price point. Mind, dealers would probably ask $55k-60k but still.

I’m with ya on this, but the V6 is unlikely to ever return to the Mustang.

The 4 cyl has proven capable of solid power numbers (a turbocharger and supporting mods will net 520b hp with a usable power band ), and the V8 starts at 460bhp and climbs from ther e — with an easy 40-50hp coming from bolt ons alone . Add a supercharger from VMP and you have 80 0bhp+ with supporting mods and a stock block.

I’d rather Ford back peddle a little and give the Ecoboost 4cyl a normal exhaust port design so we can extract more flow from it, but it is another thing we are unlikely to see happen, in the name of efficiency .
