Seriously though, these Ear Pods are proliferating at the school where I teach and I imagine these little cases full of greasy earwax from assorted ears as the kids share their buds and it makes me wanna gag.

ear buds are one thing I WILL NOT share with anyone. My favorites have aftermarket squishy foam covers that form fit to my ear. They block out external noise just like a pair of foam earplugs.

I have a pair of those Bose; they’re my work headphones because my parents got my a pair of QC35s for Xmas in 2017.

I have just engaged in a giant act of hipsterdom and bought a set of antique C. F. Cannon Cannonball headphones.

thus far, my case is clean but I do wipe down the buds before charging them. I do not share them however.

I think a few things when I look at that picture and none of those things have “hip” in them.

Yeah, these are like QC2 or 3. I love them.

If you had told me in high school that one day we would all tote $1,000 cell phones and $150 wireless headphones to school with us, I would have said there’s no way in hell parents would ever entrust that to a teenager.

Yet here we are.

For me, I love my $20 Anker Bluetooth earbuds. I can make business calls on them all day long, take them for a jog in the rain, etc. Rinse and repeat, and they hold onto my ears and sound a lot better than any Apple earbuds.

The earpods at school I wanna puke. I don’t look at them closely. I think they’re expensive, too.

If you had told me 16 years ago when I became a teacher that I’d have a document camera and an LCD projector in my classroom, I’d have been skeptical. I was writing on transparencies with vis-a-vis markers and coming home with blue hands every day.

$1,000 phones, $150 earbuds and $300 basketball shoes.

Let’s be clear, a synonym for “being a hipster” or “doing something ironically” is “being perverse”.

I merely do things that are so perverse they’re beyond the normal horizon.

I routinely scrape the funk out of my boys’ earplugs. It’s nasty. Personally, I hate those in-ear headphones, and rarely use headphones as it is. Certainly not when I’m riding. I like to hear the cars before they run me over.

The funny thing is that $150 basketball shoes go back to the late 80s. Adjusted for inflation, it’s still the status quo on shoes.

I can only imagine the look on my dad’s face if, in 1995, I had asked him if I could bring his $100 discman to school. I’d be grounded for even considering that. Expensive, fragile, distracting, etc.

Maybe this little social justice ditty will brighten your day. The price of shoes made me think of it and now I’m laughing all over again:

I replaced the pads on them in late 2017, other than that they’ve been great since I got them in 2014.

Like lurking on Oppo?

Those headphones you posted are perverse.

I’m happy to hear that you are riding still. I am considering investing in a stationary device that our bicycles attach to and makes them stationary. Our environs are lousy for bicycling and we both have nice bicycles.

I have Nana’s headphones. I think I gave her $100 for them ten years ago.

Nana also gave me her 1st-gen iPad which, it turned out, had a toasted battery. I researched YouTube on how to replace that battery and bought one for $16 and the battery replacement did not end badly, it began badly and went downhill from there and Nana’s iPad is now at the Davis Street Transfer Station .

I have little silicone jackets for my air pods because I work out with them so I like to be able to have something I can take off and scrub clean. If I run more than 4 or 5 miles, then I will also spray a microfiber with electronics cleaner and wipe down the air pods themselves.

Stigma be damned, the air pods paired with my apple watch are amazing! I don’t have to bring my phone/wallet anywhere, a quick taps answer calls, change songs etc...

I’m glad it works for you. I can’t deal with sticking things in my ears unless it’s an otoscope.

I drove a school bus when I was not yet 18 years old. (I don’t recommend that, BTW...) This was back when people listened to cassette tapes on their Walkmans. A jogger lady ran out in front of me with her headphones on. I saw her coming, so she was at no risk, but I got close enough that she probably needed to change her underwear when she got home.

Not so much still riding as back to riding. I took a lot of months off, but I’m back at it. Getting ready to do my 10-mile route. Even though it’s through neighborhood streets, I manage to average 13 mph on a good day. I have no idea how that ranks with serious riders, but it’s a workout for me.

I’ve got that same keyboard for work - picked it up as a hand me down 14 years ago and I still love it.  My gen Y co-workers make fun of me, “why don’t you want a thin wireless keyboard?”, because they make my hands hurt, their batteries die and sometimes they don’t work.

They are hard to find now. New ones are out there, but they're fifty bucks.
