I really don’t how you end up driving the wrong way on an interstate. Even if you are spectacularly drunk or otherwise impaired, the ramps simply don’t work like that.

As a resident Hellinoisian, it seems that almost no one moves over away from stopped cars on the interstates here. It doesn’t matter if it’s a cop pulling someone over or someone with car trouble. Move over people.

Its bad everywhere, I grew up just outside O’hare, and those highways are lawless. Speed limits are 55...40 if construction (there always is), and everyone is collectively going 75 like its not an issue. Detroit was no better. But I’ve been impressed with Ohio drivers.

Seems hard to me. Either you are making a hard u-turn or you are driving the wrong way down the exit ramp. In either case, you should pretty clearly be on the wrong side of the road, unlike a surface street where someone could more easily mistakenly turn onto the wrong side of a divided surface street.

I think most of them are wasted to begin with, and go the wrong way down an exit ramp. Depending on ramp configuration, that part can be fairly easy to screw up. But you would have to be wasted to not realize it when you got to the highway. Fucking morons.

Dammit. That’s awful.

I’ve experienced seeing a car go by me the wrong way on I57, and it’s a frightening experience - though it happens so fast with a closing speed of 130 mph +, it doesn’t even register until they have passed  you.

Wow.  I hadn’t seen that part of the story.  He absolutely was a hero.

Yes it is.

I saw a car heading the wrong way on I294 around Willow Rd many years ago. It was about 3 am, and I was in the right lane cruising along, when a silver SUV of some sort came barr e ling down the left lane the wrong way. Fortunately I wasn’t close to getting hit, but it really didn’t register until he was a couple hundred yards away.

I called 911 and reported it to the ISP.

when its dark and the roads are empty and the driver is inebriated i dont think theyd be able to tell

theres a few interchanges in the area where a wrong way driver literally just needs to make a right turn and theyre on the highway going the wrong way

Once you realize people are stupid, you realize how easily it can happen.

This used to happen a fair bit near where I lived in CT. There are lots of these incidents between the Gold Star bridge (the last toll stop on the old CT Turnpike and the RI border). Because it used to be tolled, e xit design in that part of CT is crap in general and not helped by the age of I-95 (it’s one of the earliest roads in the Interstate system). Some of the incidents were drivers getting confused, others driving tired or drunk .

But there’s been a big spike recently, mainly suicides. Two big incidents in the last six months. It’s scary.

So, I’m ashamed to admit this, but this actually has happened to me once (I’m 41) , and recently. Was due to poor highway design, bad signage, low light conditions (it was late in the evening ) , and poor night vision (on my part ). I was confused at first, but quickly realized what happened (not quickly enough! - I figured it out once I was on the tight curve ). Scared the shit out of me, as I had one of my kids in the car with me...   Thankfully, this is a remote area and no one was on the off-ramp at the time, and there was no nearby oncoming traffic. Clearly, it could’ve ended much, much worse...

See I can totally understand someone ending up on the wrong ramp there, but it still seems like it would have to be blindingly obvious that they were coming on to the highway from the wrong side. FWIW, probably even on a deserted night, I think I would have made a k-turn on the ramp, gone back and made a u- turn instead of making the right from the ramp to the highway (unless I didn’t notice until I was already on the highway exit lane, in which case I probably would have reversed onto the ramp ). Just seems like a bad idea to play around on the highway.

In hindsight, I should have definitely stopped immediately , moved over to the shoulder of the off-ramp, and slowly backed up to where I came from. It all happened really fast...
