They are used by the Road Policing Unit and Armed Response Units*.

*Though the Armed Response Units predominantly use the Volvo XC70s

(the red dots on the lower edge of the windscreen denote it’s an armed vehicle)

It makes the fluorescent yellow and highly reflective blue markings of the Battenburg livery stand out during the day.

It also helps with the resale value, rather than flood the market with white vehicles, some police forces use white, silver or black base cars predominantly (the Diplomatic Protection Group use red base cars with livery on top).

Ye’, while both types of Volvo are used by the Road Policing Unit and Armed Response Unit, the XC70 is favoured for ARV use and the V70 for RPU use.

Those choices make sense to me. The better visibility and easier exit of the XC70 would be helpful for armed response (which I think is a big part of why the Ford Explorer has become the default police car around here), and the better fuel economy and low CG of the V70 is definitely better for patrolling the highways.

The XC70s

Kinja'd!!!

are to replace the previous BMW X5.

Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!!

Two were crashed, one doing a tactical stop.

Written off as it was a six year old car at the time.

Kinja'd!!!

The other was written off again due to age as it had slipped off the road on heavy ice into a ditch.

We used to have four ARVs, but now have six in the form of the XC70s and six in the form if needed in the V70s.

It doesn’t sound a lot but we also have armed support from Lancashire, Yorkshire, Northumberland and support from Police Scotland (with it being a different country and some different laws, it comes under the Mutual Support in that they can if requested and authorised operate in England and use our laws) as well as the CNC (Civil Nuclear Constabulary), who operate at nuclear sites in the U.K. (these are the ones you don’t mess with).

OVIK Crossway

That, in real life comes under Protection Command and the Special Escort Group.

The Royal family have a Jaguar XJ LWB semi state limousine.

The rest of the cars, like the Bentleys, are owned by the police for escorting royalty and diplomats.

Yep, I can never remember what name goes with what other than S is saloon, V is estate and XC is ‘cross country’.

It doesn’t help that when I go to check if they are XC70s or XC90s, we had XC70s too.
