The
!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!
is my favourite car event of the year. It’s an annual low-cost 1,000-km (600-mile) classic car tour through little backroads across Ontario. I’ve done it three times now in three different classics and loved it each time. But there’s a question for the 2019 Mille looming:
What car should I take?
Option 1: Cletus-Vette!
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
I took my own 1970 Corvette on the Mille last year. It was absolutely brutal. It was hot, earplug-levels of loud inside, drained my wallet as it drained its 93-octane tank every 2-hrs, but damn it was an adventure. The pros are that it is a done and ready car that’s proven to be reliable. The C orvette is hellish but it functions flawlessly. It’s ready to go at the turn of a key. The cons are that it’s pretty crazy to drive for 1,000-km in a thing like this and I would need to find a co-pilot crazy enough to do it with me. My last co-pilot said never again.
Option 2: Buick Electra
Land barge vacation! This car belongs to my friend Matt (on here as TheBlacktopExperiment) and it is a lovely old boat. It’s reliable, quiet, and sumptuously comfortable. The polar opposite of the Corvette. We’ve taken an 800-mile trip in it before and it performed great. The pros of this option is the unrivalled comfort, the proven reliability, and the fact that Matt is going and needs a co-pilot anyways. The cons of this plan is that He is VERY picky about the car and will not under any circumstance let me actually drive it. So that means 1,000-kms of me being a passenger on the prettiest roads in the province. Doesn’t sound so b ad when you put it like that but maybe it’s all a bit too easy?
Option 3:
Borrowed MGB
Spoiled for choice that I actually have TWO friends with MGBs that I may be able to sway. I may convince one of them to come along on the Mille with me or entice them by letting them have my Stingray for a weekend. The pr os of this option are that I would get to driv e a classic I’ve never driven before, I think the MGB is a great car for sporty touring, and the gas bill would be lighter. The cons of this whole deal is that there’s no guarantee any of them will be dumb enough to go along with my scheme!
So those are my three options, which do you think I should do?

Definitely option C.
You’ve done it in t he Vette already , so it proves nothing and provides nothing that you haven’t already experienced . I did the Gambler 500-Illinois on a Yamaha Zuma 125cc scooter this past fall, with a buddy of mine who rod e a janky old Honda Helix . I’m glad we tried it. It was a hell of an adventure to ride a scooter 492 miles in two days. He wants to do it again. I say eff that noise. Been there, done that, got the t-shirt. Onward to something else.
Option B is out, because you don’t get to drive at all.

Good point! I’m all for new experiences. The Gambler on a scooter sounds fucking wild!

It was pretty freaking crazy! Here’s the write-up I did. My scooter was basically at full throttle for probably 470 of those miles, and didn’t burn a drop of oil.

Option C for sure.

It sounds fun but I tried that before and it wasn’t enough time to sort it, totally. Also monies! But it would be fun to try!

I think Matt is a overzealous. its a run of the mill buick, not some 1/40 rare camaro.
skip the buick, option C seems good.
What about the mustang? or dont think it will be ready? (who am I kidding, we KNOW it wont be)
erm...whats Alex DD’ing atm, maybe take that? or Nick and the dart?

The MGB looks like a neat project!

I too, think Matt is overly precious of his Buick but oh well. The Mustang will likely not be ready in time but god I hope it is! In the meantime he is daily driving a 1980s BMW 7-Series and he dislikes it. H is plan is to sell it and buy a 1980s Ford Ranger instead. Nick is taking a lady-crush on the Mille so his passenger seat will be full.

Remember that ad for the '75 Cadillac I sent you? If it runs well & does not need too much it be a good candidate. From the ad it already looks in good shape so it should be turn key.

Well you could drive your own car and make memories that will last a lifetime or you could drive someone else’s car...
Ownership and experiences resulting from your own hard work are much more rewarding. Take the C3

I dunno I’ve done it three times now and only once in my own car. Every time was memorable, just a different experience. All were fun!
