So I was just having a thought and I realized that the hardtop isn’t included in the payload for the gladiator, and the JLU one weighs about 100 lbs. I figure it’s about the same for the truck. So if you bought a Gladiator Rubicon auto with a hardtop (very popular combo Im sure) you would have 1060 lbs effective payload.
Which would be a little less than this, a Compass trailhawk at 1067 lbs.
Now the gladiator can tow more and it would certainly be more tolerant of overloading but its just something to think about.

I thought gladiator payload was 1600lbs.?

Not the Rubicon

I forget this thing exists.

The max is 1600, but only on one model (base with max trailer package), the rubicon with max trailer, 3.6 and auto is 1160 (without the hardtop)

Rubicon payload and towing is a total joke.
You can literally carry more than the Rubicon in a WK 5.7 (which weighs about 2.5 tons) while also towing 7000lbs .

Able to tow the equivalent of 4 adults and a suitcase.
Beastly!

Really want something to think about, my 1992 Caravan’s Payload capacity is 1500 lbs.

and its brand new.
![]() 04/02/2019 at 16:23 |

Same payload as my 90's Ram 1500. Only time that’s ever been a problem though is when I tried to buy a load of coal from one company, they’d only fill the truck to the rated capacity, where with other yards, they’d put nearly 2 tons in it.

You said Compass and I am referring to that in my first comment, but pic looks like it’s the Cherokee?

You’re right. Thanks google. I will fix.

Minivans are the payload champs of the modern car age. Even a current pacifica has a payload of 1725...which is more than my Land Cruiser.

Nah, towing separate. This number says you can seat four adults, and throw that suitcase in the bed.
![]() 04/02/2019 at 16:36 |

Is each adult 240 lbs and the suitcase 100 lbs?!

Does payload include the driver?
![]() 04/02/2019 at 16:55 |

i can't be certain on that but i think it's no for payload but yes on gcwr
![]() 04/02/2019 at 16:55 |

To be fair, most people who buy the Rubicon will only use the bed when they run out of room in the cab, and a 20 pack of bottled water is, what, 16lbs?
![]() 04/02/2019 at 16:59 |
|
Sure, but if you hitch up a 7000 lb boat and put a 200 lb driver in there you are looking at 160 lbs payload reserve. Hope your passenger is light and everything you need is in the trailer.

transit or 3 series...man thats a tough one.
![]() 04/02/2019 at 17:09 |

This is something I have harped on about since the first specs were released.
Despite its size and off road capable components...as a package, it does little but look good.

I mean, that’ s par for the course with our trucks here. The equivalent Toyota only has 1175 lbs payload after all. I asked a Toyota engineer about this once and the response was that the market wants better riding midsizers, not more capable ones. He’s not wrong. That being said, Jeeps payloads are the most hilarious in the industry. The Wrangler unlimited rubicon, for example, has an 892 lb payload...without the 100 lb top!

No way the Gladiator hard top weighs as near as much as one for the JLU. Half the length, no electric motor for wiper, no lift struts, and two fewer glass panels.
![]() 04/02/2019 at 17:46 |

quite possible, I was making a guess at that, most people seem to ballpark it around 100 lbs so thats what I was using.

bottled water? naw, nattie light.

no, I’d kinda like to. I really want to drive the new renegade trailhawk 1.3t

ahh, my sister has a 2017 compass latitude
with the base engine... it’s not bad, just pretty slow and the brake pedal is super sensitive

How much does the overly litigious culture of America play into this rating? I’m guessing it’s extra low for extra CYA on FCA’s part.
![]() 04/02/2019 at 21:57 |
|
Take the gross weight and subtract the curb weight, then compare that to the payload rating to find out. Usually passengers are part of the “payload”.
![]() 04/02/2019 at 21:59 |
|
I would imagine there is a healthy safety factor built into the rating, but by how much - that’s up to the manufacturer to decide, there are no set standards.
![]() 04/02/2019 at 22:00 |
|
passengers count against payload obviously, but a driver isn’t factored into the rating as far as I know. EDIT: we don’t have the gross mass for the gladiator yet but the Tacoma weight is 4425 and the gvm is 5600 which comes out to 1175 (the listed payload). Which means that there isn’t a driver or passenger in the math for payload
![]() 04/02/2019 at 22:19 |
|
It is probably the same for the Gladiator. Of course there is probably a generous safety factor calculated in, but still.
![]() 04/02/2019 at 23:02 |
|
not really. A ccording to a Jeep engineer I spoke to a few years ago the competition in this market has really pushed engineering to trim the fat. They are safe and every bit as strong as they say, but not nearly as overbuilt as they used to be. its much less a “she can take it, shes built tough ” attitude, more of a “our studies show we can get a 2% decrease in rolling resistance using a smaller bearing and still meet our targets” kind of attitude.
![]() 04/03/2019 at 02:52 |
|
But the Rubicon doesn’t seem like a trim lean MPG machine... I mean, it’s got a real frame and Dana 44 axles with 4.10 gears. I suppose a softer spring rate and higher ride height probably play into it. Does the gladiator have the JLU’s coil spring setup in the rear? That'll kill payload, too.

It pains me to see the manual leave. It was one of the most fun I’ve had in a car in a while. And now, the base Renegade is about $ 25k! you could have bought a brand new 2018 Sport 4x4 with a stick for under $20k. RIP in peace to the A barth Renegade

Transit by a mile.
![]() 04/03/2019 at 09:30 |
|
It uses the Ram’s coil spring suspension in the back, hence why the payload and towing is better than the JLU.
![]() 04/03/2019 at 11:36 |
|
Just remember that payload is more than springs. That being said, there seems to a lot of reserve capacity in that rear axle. the GAWR for the rear is 3750 lbs, which is far more than half the weight of even the rubicon hardtop. But...you have to remember that the rear ring is still only 220 mm or 8.7 inches and its a semi-float axle so you can only pile it on so much.
![]() 04/03/2019 at 12:12 |
|
Also, most of the bed is dangling out behind the rear axle, so if you piled on the weight it would certainly affect handling!
![]() 04/03/2019 at 12:14 |
|
yup, especially with the progressive rate coils on there, you can see from the pres shots of it towing that the back droops a lot.
![]() 04/04/2019 at 18:42 |

Apparently you can snag Compasses with manual transmissions. My mind was completely blown when I found that out.
This unassuming crossover comes with a manual.

Please crunch the numbers on whether this thing can actually carry humans along with all this gear. =)
