My Daughter turns 16 next week and we are looking at an affordable car that will take her thru college without any issues. So we are looking for a solid 6-8 years.
I found this 2010 Volkswagen Tiguan 2.0 4Motion Wolfsbu rg. It ticks all the boxes we are looking for and she wants.
What do I need to know? Good, Bad Ugly?
Also, VIN is anyone can run it! WVGBV7AX5AW534989

Is it reliable enough tho? Why not an equivalent CR -V or Rav4?

Eeeeeeeeeeehhhhhhhhh.....It’s a nearly 10 year old VW with a turbo motor and AWD. There is a chance for electrical gremlins galore. Other than that, should be okay. But maybe a Rav4/CR-V would be a bit better?

Can’t help you with the VIN check, but the Tiguas have been relatively reliable. How many miles does the car have now, and how much will she be driving? The 2.0 is a good engine mated to a fairly solid transmission (Aisin made); just keep in mind that German cars need more spendy maintenance even if everything goes well. If you’re gonna do work yourself, like fluids and belts, go for it...otherwise other options may be cheaper. The Tiguan also gets crappy gas mileage for its class.
Assuming you want a hatch with minimal maintenance, I’d say look at the Impreza with the EJ, second or third gen CRV, or even a Mitsu Mirage.

Yeah, I wouldn't trust a decade old vw to move under it's own power.

I’ll throw a Scion xB in to that mix. I’m obsessed with those things...such a practical vehicle. Not the fanciest thing, but certainly easy and cheap to operate.

108K miles. She would drive 5 miles a day now to school and back. College, who knows.

Though I have no experience with the Tiguan, personally I would not buy any German vehicle if long term reliably and low cost of ownership is the goal. Doubly so if it’s out of warranty.
It might be fine. It might not. An acceptable prospect to you or I when considering certain vehicles perhaps, but for a loved one who may not be equipped to deal with the nuances of a po tenti ally termpermental car, perhaps not so much. Imho anyway.

I want to suggest the CX-5 because we love ours, but let’s be real here a reliable solid option you know will take the high school to college girl beating for maintenance/ care will be the CRV or Rav4

Toyota Camry. It will do whatever she needs and if optioned right can have nice interiors as well. On top of that the maintenance will be basically zero.

Dark horse alternatives:
Scion xD:
Suzuki Grand Vitara:
Mitsubishi outlander:
The mitsu and suzuki are reliable all over the world. The scion is a toyota. Just some alternatives if a good deal crosses your path. I’d take a good Rav-4 or CR-V over these, but if the price and mileage are right, don’t let them turn you away.

I’d be worried about carbon buildup with a short commute on a higher mileage DI engine. The previous owner drove an average of 12k miles per year, which to me suggests limited long highway runs.
Maybe you’d be fine. 6 years though? I don’t know how confident I’d be that there wouldn’t be some major failure or at least the need for walnut blasting.
Corolla Hatch thing (Matrix or whatever they were calling it in the early 00s)? Again, I say 2009 or 2010 Impreza hatch / OB Sport

It sure seems like it. 9 year old VW, and needs to be reliable for 6-8 years more. My 2004 Touareg is probably long dead.

That’s too bad, maybe once she goes off to college she’ll learn that quirky is cool…but fall short of going full hipster for your sanity’s sake :)

I’ll echo others with the CRV and RAV4. I’ll begrudgingly add the Rogue as well - my wife had one when we met and it was superbly reliable with basic maintenance until it was totaled with about 130k or so on the clock. No reason to believe it would’ve been unreliable had it been given the opportunity to live a little longer. Boring as shit to drive and I hated the CVT, but it was a good little donkey.

I do like VW’s but I would only recommend an old one to someone who has some mechanical sympathy. I do not think it would be a good first car. They are great, but cannot really take a beating. I would look into a Rav 4 or something like that. A KIA Soul would be a decent option, or whatever their other crossovers are.

The timing guides are a wear item, and they aren’t cheap to replace.

I worry about that 2.0l TSI
All of the issues
- PCV Fails and throws Lean codes (~$100 part)
-Intake manifold Cracks, VW warranty out to 10 year or 120k
-Fuel Injectors, VW warranty out to 10 year or 120k
-Direct injection, Carboned up valves are likely
-Timing Chain Tensioner Failures, VW Warranty 10 years or 100k
-On that Timing chain, a guide likes to fail as there is a bolt that just likes to back its self out, of course causing issue
My advice Stay away from the 2.0TSI motors. Overall its ok for a G erman motor but has some huge flaws. If you can just find an older CRV (watch for oil consumption 2008-2012) or Rav-4

Not a fan of those 2.0TSI motors. Timing Chain Tensioner issues, Cracked intakes, a PCV that VW is on their 4th iteration of because they cant get it right, Direct injection issues, and possible Injector issues.
IMO not a good motor . Do agree s trong trans though
