I’ve talked on here before about how we deal with traffic during rush hour by opening the breakdown lane for travel. This is another example of how mixing dumb design and dumb driving and is dumb.
I had just entered the highway and was (legally) driving in the breakdown lane. I’m still picking up speed, going about 60. The jeep behind me is still closing in quickly when the girl infront of me just stops. 0 mph. DAAAAA FUCKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK. There is too much traffic to bail to the next lane so I hit the brakes. The Jeep is still closing in fast with its nose diving. Luckily everyone was able to stop but no i’m stuck at 0 mph as the lane next to me is going at 60-80 mph with heavy traffic. When I was finally able to leave, I beeped at her. I dont know what was wrong. she looked fine, her tires looked fine. I dont know. Had she continued an 1/8th of a mile she could have pulled off the road completely saving me and the Jeep from shitting our pants. After normal life functions resumed operation (pulse, breathing) I started to feel bad and thought I should have pulled over infront of her to at least suggest she moved, but at that moment I was too concerned with not getting run over by a Suburban.
I later saw an Audi like this and all was alright

I continue to believe letting people drive in the bre ak down lane is a terrible idea. They do seem to be moving away from it though as they improve sections of road.

it is a terrible idea and they are re-doing the bridges in this stretch of road and are not doing it in a way to fix this problem so at least for this area, i don’ t see it going away.

“ I started to feel bad and thought I should have pulled over infront of here to at least suggest she moved”
No, you absolutely should not have. That’s how people get run over, and you’ve got a family to take care of.

i thought if i pulled infront of her and got out
the passenger side at least i’d be off the road and she’d take the hit, not me. But you are
right.

Way too risky. We’ve had 16 Illinois State Troopers get hit this year alone, and three of them are dead. If her car was on fire, and you’ve gotta save her, then the risk is worth it. Otherwise, no. I won’t even stop for my own flat tire. I’ll drive on the rim until I get to an exit and buy a new wheel.

Yep, being on the side of the highway is not safe, and especially not on a highway where they let people drive on the shoulder.

In Phoenix the suicide lane on our busiest surface street turns into a travel lane during the morning and evening rush hour (opposite directions for each rush hour). The lane direction times are listed on signs above the lane. The second closest I’ve come to dying while driving was when someone got confused and pulled out of the lane and in front of me, thinking they couldn’t be in the lane. I was doing 45mph on a forty-five year old motorcycle with cable actuated drum brakes. After some fun fishtailing I came to a stop about and inch from their bumper. I saw their Canadian license plate and realized our warm weather had probably melted their brain.
