They aren’t that tough to tell apart, but if you eat your candies a handful at a time you’ll be in for a surprise .
The average mass of an M&M is about 0.85g whereas skittles are just over 1g on average. Skittles are also less oblate (more spherical). Reese’s are smaller than either of the other candies and much thinner; however, Reese’s and M&M’s go great together so really you just need to separate out the less desirable Skittles and you’re good to go.
Either a thin grating, visual inspection, or a mass separation strategy should work to get rid of the rainbow tasting interlopers.
An April fools joke where you get free candy is a pretty good prank in my opinion.

The other day I was in the grocery store and I saw Jalapeno Peanut M&Ms. No kidding. How horrible.
Oh, also, that mix would be no problem for me, because before I eat Skittles or
M&Ms I always array them by color in orderly rows and columns, where the colors are lined up in prism-spectrum order. So I wouldn’t mix one variety with another anyway.

But M&Ms and Reese’s together are awesome. Just pick out the Skittles and you’re golden.

Wow. That’s great. Disgusting, but great.
I might steal this idea next year.
