I have found, that most door latches are designed so that the brunt of force focuses on a certain small area of the design... leading to eventual breaks. I hate it. I’d pay the extra $100 or so for really robust door handles everywhere

A family member's '93 Camry did this. He just put a zip tie on the bottom of that little bit that's still attached.

www.car-part.com. Cut Ebay out and save some $$$$. Usually same part on eBay is half the price if you call them direct.

This door handle design (on all makes/models) has been one giant design flaw since the beginning. Ever wonder why almost everyone has moved to “pass through” handles in the past 10-15 years? So much ergonomically better, and less strain on the parts.
Things were different when everything was made of thick steel.

I replaced the front door handles with rear door handles on my civic so as to not have keyholes. dunno if its an option for the Lexus, but can be a neat mod, since you have changes to make anyway.

Nah, not an option. The keyholes are very useful anyways.

There are none in my area and once you add shipping to what people want for these fucking things it ends up being just as expensive.

Ah man, you know, with the Mazda, I really thought it was the car. But now, reading all the stuff about the IS, the keys and airbag recall on the Mazda and now this....its not the cars man...its you!
Dont worry though, youre not alone. I havent driven my ITR properly in 3 months. Turns out, I might have the most unreliable Honda in the world! F*cking yay!

Yep, but I was talking about the heavy-gauge steel from the 80s (and earlier). Applying the same idea, but using these thinner metals sounds like a recipe for hassle.

This is pretty thick (12-14 ga or so) but I think it’s also cast pot metal so not super strong despite the significant heft.

$85 list part.
$150
0+ because it’s paint to match
Breaks every time you get any significant ice on the car because it intrudes into the hinge and space between handle and lock.

That sucks. At least you can use the little corner to open it.
If it were a GM car, the mechanism would just completely break from the handle so you couldn’t open it at all. Ask me how I know.

If I can get ANY days in April at all anymore, Ill most likely rent something in Holland and thrash it around.

what car is that so I can never buy one.
FWIW, it was $600 at the dealership to replace the handle like that on my ‘05 Mustang. I got a new one for $12 brand new off rockauto and use color matched duplicolor cans to paint match it for another $20. Looked flawless.

This eventually happens to just about every Japanese car from the 80's and 90's. T hat shit pot metal isn’t very malleable (but very cheap to cast), so eventually it will start stress cracking with enough use cycles. Add in old/worn/dirty/in need of lubrication door latch mechanisms and/or worn hinges and a sagging door that results in more force being applied to that handle than the day the car left the factory and they’ll all fail eventually. There isn’t an original door handle left on my racecar.

It’s used on a shitton of GM products. If you have a ‘boring’ color it’s cheap. But that? That’s Diamond White Tri-Coat. Which is both expensive as hell and a nightmare to lay down, much less blend.

I meant the manufacturer would probably add $100 per car MSRP to make better doors. Which I’m totally down for.
I’ve had inner door handles broken on a few cars before...and it’s always a pain. Replacement parts cost more than they should and still have the same design flaws.

Yeah, might be cheaper if you check eBay in a RHD market? Guessing the driver’s goes first.
Considering it’s under $150 new from a lot of Toyota places it must fail pretty frequently.

I actually did confirm, but things got a bit messy at work. I’m still in the process of getting at least a couple of days off, at the least. We’ll see what happens, I’m keeping Duurtlang posted.

and there is the difference in Mercedes Benz and Lexus. The Germans would had made it beefy, complicated and impervious to this type of breakage. The flip side is it’d be a $400 part that wouldn’t break like that...it’d be a $400 part that would look really nice but not function because it’s complicated.

Oof that's a rare failure on an LS and an annoying one. Removing that handle for replacement is a very tight squeeze too. I'd try Facebook market place and the ls400 Facebook groups and see if anyone has a white tri-coat handle
