Not the Fiat, obviously. The low-res 70s fastback with a really familiar looking rear window but taillights I don’t think I’ve ever seen.

You have a better shot of the taillights perchance?

Disagree. Taillights are longer at the bottom, not squared up. Similar to Chrysler LeBaron. (No, it’s not a LeBaron.)

Unfortunately not. My friend’s uncle took the picture and sent it to him

Aren’t those taillights significantly different?

This could be right.
The plastic over the car in the picture was making it look like more of a fastback and hiding the crease in the soft top

They match to me. Fender cutout and the rear window sitting slightly high as well.

AMC had a bunch of cars with that sort of triangular wrap around taillight, but I don’t see any that look like the car pictured.

My first thought was a Hornet but that didn’t match up

The c hrome strip there is what’s throwing me off. It’s a convertible, but it’s NOT an XJS. The taillights are triangular-sided with partial chrome ; XJS is trapezoidal with full chrome surround.
It’s not a TC, because the TC doesn’t have the chrome strip. (It’s the correct window for the TC’s soft top. Yes it had both.)
It’s not a LeBaron because just trust me it’s not a LeBaron. Totally wrong top.
It’s not an Allante because the Allante’s window goes all the way to the bottom. Though the Allante has the correct chrome pattern! This is what I mean:
But again, totally wrong window, totally wrong everything else, NOT an Allante.
It’s not a Buick Reatta Convertible. The top is too sharply bowed, and it’s not rounded enough . But, I’d wager it is a glass window soft top. So it’s not a Shadow.
Man, this one is definitely beating me.

Definitely an XJS convertible. Upon further enhancement it looks like the taillight line you’re seeing is just a crease in the plastic sheeting. Plus the XJS convertible door handles match up perfectly.

I may be getting messed up by the cover on the car screwing up the profile of the taillight.

I don’t know; I think the plastic cover is making this harder than it should be. Some of what I thought was chrome is just folds in the plastic

It’s definitely not. That is definitely a big chrome strip along the upper and outside edge of the taillight assembly, and that is DEFINITELY triangular at the outside. The angle and low resolution is just killing me though.

On the upper part I agree, but look at the triangular part compared to other folds and to other chrome pieces. The color and width of it make it look a lot more like a fold to me.

That would make it even more wrong.
These are XJS taillights:
NOT TRIANGULAR. Full chrome surround.
NOPE!
FULL. CHROME. SURROUND. RECTANGLE.
So no. It is not an XJS convertible.

Even if it is, completely wrong taillights to be a Jag XJS. XJS is gobs of chrome and goes six miles into the rear quarter.

After sharpening the crap out of the photo it appears that
the taillight trim does continue to wrap around the lamp and that the lamp is not triangular
. Regardless, the tint of the light, the door handle, the side window profile, the convertible top shape and colour, the squareness and flare
of the wheel arch,
the location and size of the retractable antenna, the location and size and chrome material of the door mirror
say
that this is a later XJS convertible.

It’s absolutely a convertible - you can see the bow above the backlight.
And the proportions are wrong for the XJS .
It does seem to match up with an old Volvo C70 perhaps?

What’s funny is the 2nd pic he posted of the later XJS, the red convertible, is the EXACT car that’s in the OP’s pic at the top lol. Same red, same tan convertible top, and same flat 5 -spoke wheels.
100% that is the exact car in question, no question.
