Monday’s , am I right?
Got rear ended on my way home from today. I looked up in my rear view and saw the guy coming towards me at 8-10 mph staring at his cell phone. BAM. Here’s where it gets interesting..
The guy signals me to pull over (thank god, I assumed he was going to run), we get out and assess the cars. His MKZ is already beat to hell, mine doesn’t look horrible. He lets me know he doesn’t have insurance and will pay me in cash. This freaks me out a bit and I try to get all information I can as a precaution.
Homie doesn’t have a license on him but does have a passport. This feels sketchy. I get a picture of his passport info and made sure the number he gave was actually his. He apologizes again and assures me he’ll pay me.
Should I have gotten a police report? Yeah, most likely, but this was my first accident, I just got his info and didn’t really think to since the car didn’t look too bad and I wasn’t hurt.
I do some digging after I get home and find out homie’s got like 3 felony arrests for drugs, assault, etc. I’m feeling pretty pessimistic he’ll return my call/get any money. Oh well, I’m not hurt and the car isn’t badly damaged. That’s all that really matters.
Will get an estimate tomorrow. I’m thinking at least $1500+. Happy Monday!

If he doesn’t pay up, you have all the info to report a hit and run. Should have gotten a police report though (remember this for next time, it’ll save you a lot of headache). It’ll probably be $2-3k for the bumper cover if that is all that’s damaged.

Definitely definitely s hould’ve called the boys, can’t trust someone who doesn’t have a license or insurance. At the very least with a police report and it being a rear end your insurance shouldn’t find you at fault and therefore your rates shouldn’t change.

Yep. Don’t know why I didn’t think to call but live and learn.
I’m thinking it’ll be just a bumper cover but we shall see tomorrow.

Honestly, worst case scenario it’ll be almost impossible to notice if you can get behind the cover and get the plastic flush.

Hey, that might have worked out for the best. He could have just ran, but didn't. He might have had you called the cops -- or worse, given his record. No one got hurt, you have underinsured motorist's insurance I assume, boom: okay ending to a bad morning.

That’s how I’m trying to look at it. I got important enough information from him. If he can pay my deductible, great. If not I do have underinsured coverage. I’m just greatful not to be hurt.

could have a lot worse.
didn’t show a license so you don’t know where he really lives or more likely he doesn’t have one.
if you did call the cops, he may have shot you and done a runner

Your estimate is kinda high. I had my front bumper cover, headlight, front fender, and hood work done to my Mazda 2 for under $2k.

Yeah it’s hard to imagine a situation like that, but I’d rather just go after uninsured motorist insurance than get into an altercation.

My friend’s brand new
honda was right around $2k for the rear bumper cover last year
, I have to imagine GTI parts / paint is more costly.

ahh. Yeah mine was a 2015. Less sensors I suppose.
