We were watching the Oscars last night, and wondering whether Rami Malek did any of the singing in Bohemian Rhapsody . Turns out he didn’t, they used bits from Freddie Mercury recording sessions, but they also used new recordings made by this guy, Marc Martel, a Christian rock singer from Canada. Here is Martel singing We Are The Champions . Why Queen are using Adam Lambert and not this guy is beyond me. This is crazy good.
Here’s a !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! in case the video doesn’t play here.

I meant to share this with you (though you’v e probably heard it). Someone did this at a recital with a pianist and trumpet player and it’s stayed in my head ever since.

I think if you combine Lambert’s ability to hit higher notes on key (if I recall correctly) with most everything else about Martel’s voice, you’d get as close to Mercury as we’ve ever seen.
Then there’s also the fact that Lambert has a tendency to be kind of out there like Mercury was (stage presence, outfits, etc
).

I have neither seen nor heard this before. It very accurately describes how I often feel about my instrument. Dizzy Gillespie once said, “Some days you get up and put the horn to your chops and it sounds pretty good and you win. Some days you try and nothing works and the horn wins. This goes on and on and then you die and the horn wins.” Truer words.....
But I am intrigued by this. Near as I can tell, it comes from a 2010 movie titled The Last Circus. But I’m wondering if the singing clown is actually from an older movie, or if the look and feel of a late 60s movie was faithfully recreated for the 2010 film. I can’t find anything definitive as of yet, but I will keep looking.
Thanks for letting me know about this.

That was basically my thought. Y ou don’t want to try to recreate Freddie Mercury in toto, and Lambert certainly brings the flamboyance, if not the voice.

Exactly. As much as I might like
someone with a closer voice to Mercury’s, I prefer someone who has a good enough voice with a lot of personality to front Queen. Someone has to offset all the academics playing their instruments.

I’m gonna guess the stage presence of most Christian “rockers” falls short of what’s needed to front Queen.

I thought of that too. As I said elsewhere in this post, Lambert brings the flamboyance, if not the voice.
