Tasty BMW forbidden fruit for your time.
When I first became an auto owner, I signed up with the same insurance company my parents had at the time (Allstate) and have stayed with them since. That was more than five years ago and I’m told it would be worth my time to shop around. I’ve also heard that it can be beneficial to go through a local agent that isn’t affiliated with one of the national insurance companies, but I don’t really where to start. Does Oppo have any advice?

I stuck with my parents’ insurance (Allstate) 20 years ago and still haven’t switched. The reason being that all their bundling discounts make a lot of competitors almost the exact same price. But if you’re just looking at a la carte insurance policies, there are plenty of comparison sites...just be prepared for endless emails and phone calls because they usually pass your info along to the companies.
As a general rule, the best rates and service will come from a mutual insurance company, since they’re non-profit. Amica, USAA (if you have military family), and several others are usually the best rated all around.

Definitely worth your time to shop around, almost no reason not to with how insurance pricing ‘ works’ . Start with online quotes and see which gives you the best price/coverage and also check to see if there are any discounts offered by the insurer you are eligible for.
I’m not sure a unaffiliated local agent would be doing other than handling the above dirty work for you but I could be wrong. I suppose they could have the local knowledge of where cars are sent for claims? Idk, maybe another Oppo can chime in on that one.

I go through an agent and its great for someone who gets tickets. I imagine if your record is always the same, sticking with one is fine. But when tickets go on/off my record she switches me around and its very nice.
Just for reference they go through all of these companies -

shop around, if you find a quote you like, get it in writing, not just over the phone.
also, phone calls, not the online estimators. those are USELESS

If you’re <30 like me, Allstate seems to be higher than others. Geico was okay, but then increased the price a decent bit after a year. I switched to Erie and got a great rate. Local agent too, which I always prefer over some call center agent.

We’ve had very good experiences with Am Fam. Tried switching to “save money” a while back, ended up being a complete shitshow, went back to Am Fam.
They’ve been by far the cheapest/best coverage options for us.

I went from Safeco (under my parents) to Geico as a young broke adult, to Allstate which I don’t intend to leave. I have a great agent.

I switched from Liberty Mutual to Kentucky Farm Bureau and I’m saving about $150/mo with better coverage. If you have something similar where you’re from, give it a look.

We just switched over to progressive for home and auto, about $2k savings over AAA that we’ve been with for over 10 years. The rates just kept going up and up based on MI screwy no fault BS so it was time to shop around when we bought the new house. Just run through the online apps for the different companies, there’s really no short cut. Have you current insurance docs in front if you and pick the similar coverages. And see what comes out best for you. Such a pain in the ass.

download the Root app (if they operate in your state) and see what rate they give. You need to drive a few days before they give a quote as they track a few things. I don’t think speed is one of them (I never watched my speed and I’m lead footed ) but times of day travel ed, how often, how far and some measure from the phones motion sensors regarding cornering force or something. Saved me a good deal.
