Branding has been painted over. I’d guess it’s more of a boneyard, and these are awaiting salvaging, scrapping, or refurbishment for other airlines (though I wouldn’t imagine a SW 737 would have many cycles left when they are done with it) .

I wonder how expensive it would be to re-design the 748's wing to accomodate two of those GE's engines instead of the four small ones.

Looks like the most recent Google imagery is from 8/2018 so doesn’t show it:
I’m guessing the Chinese plane (can’t identify the airline, there are a bunch that look very similar) is an ex-Southwest airliner, as it would be fairly weird for a Chinese narrow body to find itself on this side of the Pacific (other than at Renton, and this would be very much the wrong direction from there).

Probably enough that it wouldn’t be worth doing vs. just getting the 777X. I have sort of the same feeling about the B-52, they are planning to re-engine it with 8 regional jet engines, but it feels like a little extra design work could make it work with two of the engines from a 787, saving a massive amount a maintenance work, while providing greater efficiency (and thus more range).

I think the “fuck taxpayers” part was handled by the head of state that decided he needed that 787. Honestly, anything bigger than a 737/A320 is just totally unnec e ss ary thing for heads of state/politicians. Hell, most of them would do perfectly fine with a nice Gulfstream or Bombardier Global.
So in that sense I agree that it is way too lavish. But sitting on the ground it’s no use to anyone, and I guess the guy is now spending money on chartered planes when he need to go somewhere.

I agree that the mistake was buying it. But now that we have it, its cheaper to fly it than comercial (we forget how many people travel with the president and how cheap the 787 is to run) and keeping a state of the art jet effectively grounded because of one guy’s ego.
He also got rid of all the bulletproof cars and got himself a brand new entourage of SU Vs which admittedly have better fuel economy as they aren’t bulletproofed but still, new SUVs....

I went to Google, too. I didn’t know that place was there. Lots of 747s. We stumbled across another boneyard outside Roswell, NM a few years ago. We were driving into town and started seeing vertical stabilizers. Lots of them. I made a point of going by for a look that evening.
