The MK4 R32 only made 240bhp! I thought it made more than that. The S3 was a direct competitor.

Indeed they were. The 8P generation A3 3.2 was even more of a direct competitor to the MKV Golf R32 as both had the same engine and Haldex awd system. Weirdly enough the 8P S3 had 265 hp from 2 liters.

You’re probably the first American to call 265hp a lot ( or I’m too dumb to recognize sarcasm) but I agree. I’m strongly considering a > 200hp Audi A3 as my next car

Not being sarcastic (well im not an American either ) but 265bhp in a small hatch is quite a lot. Especially in the mid 2000s
