I’ll have to deal with an interesting road trip in a few weeks to attend a friend’s wedding (because if your wedding isn’t at least two hours away from any convienent venue, is it really a wedding?), and it reminded me of a pretty bad road trimp I had last year.

Kinja'd!!!

A friend of mine actually lives in Avandaro. Which is a strange town, basically imagine if obnoxious northern California liberals were hypocrites and also rich, and also Mexicans who bitch about “The City”in every conversation they have.

Anways, I went with my friend, and a friend of hers. Her friend was a total dick, and on our way back to Mexico City, my friend decided to stay in Avandaro and I had to take the whole road trip alone in my dad’s Jeep, with this obnoxious asshole.

I tried to make a conversation with her, but I failed, so I stayed the whole trip quiet, and so did she. She insisted on leaving some sort of song radio on spotify based on Fleetwood Mac, and by the third song I was super annoyed by it.

It was then that we approached a blocked toll booth. Aparently some protest about free highways. Ironically the protestors insisted we “contributed” to their cause.

She, euphorically, cooperated, and then said it was pretty cool that they did that. But why? Blocking a toll highway to demand better transport is kind of ironic since the toll road pays (via a regressive tax) for better transport services, amongst them, free highways .

Anyways, she spent the rest of the ride saying I was a cuck for not supporting the protest. and did I mention she was an asshole?

So now, on this wedding trip I agreed to take someone who I haven’t decided what relationship I have with them yet. It’s bound to b somewhat strange.

Yes, I’m talking about my middle school ex.

Good luck. And this is why my girlfriend and I are heavily considering eloping, because weddings sound terrible for all parties involved.

I don’t really want to get married, but if I do, It’s only gonna be the legal ceremony, and only the witnesses would be allowed to enter the room. No family, no friends, no 30,000 dollar event. (or whatever a wedding is supposed to cost)

We had like a 15 person wedding. Immediate family (parents/sibblings) and remaining grandparents only. Did the ceremony for free on a dock, had the dinner at the resturaunt my wife worked at.

Cheap, short and small.

That sounds nice. I’ve been to big fancy weddings (and helped set them up) and man can I think of better ways to spend my money.

My dad’s wedding was also quite small, but then my grampa got drunk and started professing to his love to my grammy (his first wife, also drunk), while his fourth wife (also drunk) sat beside them.

I love road trips and I love being in the car for a long time, but bad company ruins that so fast. I just had a lovely 300 mile day on wednesday out to Hoth and back and even though most people would call it boring and desolate I love it. I was by myself.

Funfact: John Lennon actually wrote this lyric, then laughed and threw it in the trash.

Im talking about people who complain about how the government drove away heards of people when they flooded the valley in order to build a dam there.... but these same people moved there because of the newly formed lake, and also drove heards of locals away by turning farmland into tourist venues

Best way to road trip. Desolate, by oneself.

yes people can ruin trips, they can also make them feel interminable. I also like driving alone, and I do a lot of exploring at times

Anyone who ever uses the term “ cuck” un ironically is automatically an asshole.

And, what HHFP said - road trips can be awesome with the right company. And they suck with bad company.

Question. Do you live in Mexico City? I am thinking of traveling as I go deeper in middle age, and debated on staying there for a little while. What do you think?

Also middle school ex? Jesus, I didn’t start dating seriously until after college. I must be behind the curve. Granted, I didn’t grow up with Tinder.

I do live in Mexico City, and it is a great destination. We’ve been investing heavily in restoring the historic downtown district, only London has more museums a nd National Geographic named it the top destination in 2019.

You could really spend a month just exploring a few of the more touristic neighborhoods, and the food is unlike any other city in the world. However, my recomendation is that you research it heavily because there isn’t one right way to visit here.

More than anything, you need to be comfortable with how unsafe the city can be depending on what neighborhood you are visiting, and of course how much your stomach can handle if you’re wanting to test street food.

The Metro, and Metrobus are really good, even if some concerns about safety have started to bubble up, just don’t take any unregistered cabs or buses (stick to uber tbh).

My personal recomendation is that you must visit UNAM, and spend at least half a day there, and also try to participate in the Sunday bycicle tours. The police close the iconic Reforma avenue from the national auditorium up to Bellas Artes and you can walk or ride a bycicle on the road without a single car.

I also recomend that you wait a bit, Best time to visit is probably October, and by then we'll see how much our current mayor can control crime, as it has been on the rise for the last six years. Mind you, it's not significantly unsafer than say, Detroit.

Great backstory...on a related note, Alabama (my home state) has more manmade lakefront per capita than any other state in the US. Most of the valleys were flooded between the 1930s (Great Depression) and the early 1980s. A lot of farmers and people were upset to lose 80%+ of their land, but were almost all instantly millionaires, so they ended up pretty happy about it in the end. Plus it added a lot of clean hydroelectric power, too. I guess you could say that people can hold hardline opinions, but often come around in the end.

But I suspect the people you’re talking about weren’t actually affected by the flooding. They were just outraged because it gave them something to be mad about.

I mean, it’s a shame so many families were displaced, but the economy that got built around the lake is huge. Valle de Bravo is ten times richer than all of the adjacent municipalities, and their GPD per capita is is 23% higher than the Mexican average. That’s incredible considering it’s a rural municipality.

If anything, those displaced farmers have a lot more customers now , since most of the restaurant business in Valle de Bravo are based on organic and local produce.

You can talk all day about how fake it is, but everyone got a better deal out of it... which is kind of the point. I don’t see any Vallesanos moving to the adjacent municipalities for the real experience of Mexico ¯\_()_/¯

Yep, a lot of what you’re describing is a perfect analog for rural America in the 1930s-1960s when a lot of similar development was going on. Yes, displacement is emotionally hard, but the net gains for everyone involved are hard to argue with. For a lot of people, it’s the difference between “barely surviving” and “living comfortably.”

And another side benefit you touched upon is that it’s fewer people crowding into cities looking for work.

It's an isolated case, but yeah... little pockets of economic activity are better than a huge-ass city.
