As some of you may know I am one of Jehovah’s Whitnesses. Some of you may also know that the Russian Government labeled Whitnesses as a extremist group, and band our meetings, ministry work, and publications in April of 2017, as well as confiscating our places of meeting, and branch office . Regardless of your view of religion, or your opinion on JWs the loss of religion freedom should be upsetting to anyone. Despite this being pretty shocking to anyone who lives in a “free country” it really didn’t get much media attention. So that’s why I am sharing an update.

People were arrested, beaten, stripped naked, and shocked. Because they would not give up the meeting locations that the Whitnesses have been using since the government confiscated their Kindom Halls(places of worship/meeting)

I know JWs are far from the only group to be mistreated, and this isn’t even the first time this has happened. Usually the cause of injustice toward JWs is our nutural stand on war, and politics.

The thing is this is not happening in some 3rd world country, it’s happening in a major world power. I’m still a bit shocked.

Also I know some of you are thinking “this report is from their own website, why would I believe it” and. That’s far. I did read a few other reports. Essentially the only people talking about it are a spokesperson for Jehovah’s Whitnesses, and representatives for the Russian Goverment who obviously deny the claim. So I guess the only rebuttal I have to that is “what do the Whitnesses have to gain from sti ring the pot with lies?”

Russia is absolutely not a first world country. The only reason we pay attention to them is because they have nukes.

On the other hand, It is a shame anyone gets tortured for one of their convictions. I don't know how large the JW community is across the world, but it is worth reporting.

About 8.5 million people world wide. I don’t remember who many there was in Russia at the time it was band, and that number is no longer publicized.

In 2016 the peak Publisher(those who engage in the ministry work regularly) count in Russia was 170,000.

Not to take anything away from what you are saying, but it’s “ banned” , not “ band.”

I have friends from several “fringe” religions and cringe when I hear some of the things they or their families have had to deal with.

It is a strange feeling to think that it could be me being beaten in a coldi i nterrogation room. And it’s easy to think “That’ll never happen in America.” But for one it has, and the way things are going it probably will.

Russia seems like it could be an interesting place to live as long as you can stay under the radar. As in, I find a lot of the history and culture fascinating, but the government is pretty much terrifying. A high school friend (from my Russian class) lived there for a few years after he graduated from college, but he’s gay and it wasn’t safe for him to stay there.

I don’t believe in religion, but I don’t have a problem with other people practicing whatever they want. It’s unfortunate that so many people choose religion as a cover for activism because it puts far too many innocent people under threat.

That’s awful if true. Nobody deserves that kind of prosecution. We have a thriving Kingdom Hall here and every JW I’ve known has been a genuinely good person. I loathe to think of the notion that anything like that could happen to them.

I’m not a man of faith, and I have some o p ini ons, but religious persecution is not cool. Doesn’t matter who or which. Gotta let people be. It’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but why bother the JWs? easy to pick on? I can’t see them being a threat to Russia.

The only thing I can think of is our national and political neutrality. I don’t live in Russia, obviously, but it seems they are focused on getting their citizens to believe that their country is the best country.

You can’t have people going around telling others that all people, and all countries are equal in God’s eyes now can you?
