Since shopteacher is sharing his woes with rust I thought I’d join the misery. Like shopteacher I feel like things got exponentially worse this winter. Most of the rust here was not all that noticeable last year.

Jeez, that’s pretty bad.

Rust is lighter then carbon fiber. Cheaper too.

Yup, that 3rd pic is actually a hole through the floor board

I’d post a picture of my truck, but it’s a Chevy and I’m pretty sure that the rear fender wells start rusting before the metal leaves the foundry.

Oooffff!!! I physically winced at the sight of that first door jamb pic. That's really bad!

Seriously, they use way too much of the stuff. Maybe go a little easier - use some sand or cinders or gravel, maybe don’t scrape all the way down to the asphalt so you don’t get a smooth sheet of ice, or, maybe just accept that some businesses need to open an hour or two later to give the plows time to get around. Not the end of the world.

I don’t usually eat road, is it any good?

When I first realized how bad it was I did one of those “oh looks like there’s some rust here” *poke* “Oh god!”

depends on how hard you hit it on the first bite
hit it hard enough its pretty damn euphoric... till you wake
softer than that it mostly just hurts and tastes sandy

I wish they’d just use sand and beet juice. And maybe require winter tires from December through March.

Krown helps a lot
But really, they should stop using salt. There are better alternatives that don’t do that kind of damage. Calcium magnesium acetate (CMA) and proplyene glycol are the two most prominent examples. CMA works at the same temperatures that regular salt
does.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
sand is bad because it doesn’t actually melt snow/ice and clogs up the sewers
.

I’m just spit balling here...all I know is I hate salt

That’s exactly what I did this morning with the passenger side rocker panel.
“Oh, least this side doesn’t seem so bad.”
*Reaches under and grabs a fist full of flakes that used to be metal*
“Mother of God!"

Word I’ve heard is the best juice is actually even worse. Supposedly in places that have been using it a while call in car-b-gone. They’ve been using it more and more down here, and I’m wondering if that wasn’t a factor in how much wor se my rockers have gotten this winter.

I hadn’t heard that. I thought it was supposed to be better for the environment and for cars. I may need to do some research

Let us know what you find out. I’m reporting what I’ve heard from grizzled old shop teachers. Some of us are known to be ... Dramatic.
As I'm told, the problem with the beet juice, is it gets up into the crevices and sticks in a way that salt doesn't.

But then I’d be upside down and on the wrong side of the road

driving on the left is fun
upside down is better again
:)

bonus is you never need to worry about rust, road salt or snow ever again.

I wire wheel and paint my rockers/door bottoms at least once a year, sadly the wheel wells are starting to go and there’s not much I can do to slow them down . This year though I finally had enough money to buy a winter beater Cobalt that I give zero shits about. I’ll take the truck on the really bad days though.
