Who asked for fake exhausts?

Kinja'd!!!

Lets admit, exhausts are a niche appeal, I’m yet to meet a non car person that cares about exhuast design, and most car enthusiasts I know hate fake exhaust tips... so why do they exist? I can’t find a middle ground of people that look at the stupid tips on my car and think “OH YEAH!” Most, myself included, think it’s gaudy overkill.

Many love quad exhausts or crazy designs, but not fake tips. I don’t really know why automakers use them.... I’ve heard everything from sooty turbo engines making bumpers dirty to actual melting bumpers, but I feel that those are fixable problems.

I get it, people want aesthetics, but I feel that neither those who don’t care, nor those who do are being catered to appropriately by designers nowadays.

I firmly believe that it’s not a feature that 90% of consumers will ever notice. There are form factors that consumers like and dislike cars based on, things like color, headlight shape, beltline, etc. This is one of those form factors that consumers don’t necessarily have preference towards, but that has a significant effect on the overall look of a vehicle. It’s one of those “I didn’t know I liked this” things.

That is my running gag at work for the past 2 weeks.  Fucken millennials for everything, and my younger coworker either says fucken millennials (which he is) or fucken gen X

It’s great, also tongue in cheek as I am a millennial myself.

I think that designers need to be more adventurous with bumpers instead of depending on grilles and exhausts to be part of the design. The contrast can be good, but when its fake... car geeks hate it, and I’m willing to bet than 0% of C300 buyers chose the c300 because of the real  exhaust tips

eh... i can get a chromed exhaust tip or something like that... sometimes it just adds to the look

not for me personally tho... im the kind of idiot that gets a full aftermarket exhaust for the look of it

(but not the kind of idiot that gets a massive sewer pipe exhaust for a 1l shitbox coz they think it adds power)

It’s not as bad as this fake exhaust trend. Seen on the 2019 Corolla HB & SQ5.

yeah... thats pretty much exactly what they say here too

more exhaust flow mean more power brooo!

wich i guess would be true if the little exhaust on your little engine was insufficient for its output... wich it wasnt

or maybe if it was insufficient  it would just asplode *shrugs*

I don't tink either is OK. I think that both cars would look better with a completely painted bumper, or a visible tip.

styling.

seriously, that’s about it. Exhaust systems are a pain in the ass to keep in alignment, especially ones with dual outlets. They’re soft mounted on rubber hangers, and the movement of the engine on its elastomer mounts means it’s jerking the exhaust system around every which way. eventually it shifts over. After 50,000 miles the exhaust tips of my SRT-4 were noticeably uneven.

“fake” outlets in the rear fascia never move.

But consumers would likely notice if you did something awful. Like side view mirrors, car people appreciate (mostly) the side view mirrors on a Huarya as an intricate detail. Most consumers won’t notice their side view mirror unless you did something off the wall and it was totally awful, same with exhausts.

Actual exhaust tips = expensive. Chromed plastic circles on bumper = cheap.

Aiming the exhaust downwards under the bumper=cheapest

I can understand that logic, but how much do they move in order to justify that?

I f the exhaust rattled itself out of alignment wouldn’t it damage the plastic outlets? mine has maybe 1cm of clearance, if it began hanging low it might make the bumper vibrate and heat up a lot more...

I think that making the tip shorter makes the system lighter and also rattle less. The increased margin of error might also have manufacturing benefits, but wouldn't we get that too if the exhausts were pointed downwards and there were no holes on the bumper?

They’re not fake tips, they just have the section cut out for weight reduction

A LOT .

Go grab yourself an elastomer mount for a common exhaust system. It’ll stretch as much as 50% and with as much as 180 degrees of travel depending on the car, mounting in whole, the road, and other factors. Now consider that this is well upstream of the actual tip. Reducing motion means more, stiffer mounts. Which increases the NVH - exponentially - and warranty exposure (emissions systems are 8 years no matter what the dealer tells you.) It also costs more.

That’s why the ‘fake’ tips you see in the post have those metal blockouts. Without them, the actual tips WILL contact the surround .

There’s ALSO the problem of corn syrup in gasoline. ETHANOL. IS. VILE. SHIT. Ethanol is also EXACTLY why your bright shiny exhaust tips turn black as hell with sticky soot. And that shit is such a pain to clean off. Cars produce soot; ethanol makes soot worse. Simple as that. Allegedly produces less harmful compounds, but produces more disgusting looking soot. Those fake exhaust tips make it almost tolerable to clean up, and can be made significantly more resistant to build-up.

If the hanger streches 50% the tips would end up resting on the bumper since the metal blockers don’t really do anything for up/down motion... or at least it doesn't seem as such.

The hanger may stretch up to 50%, so, tips do strike on occasion. Depends on materials, design, how worn out it is, etcetera, ad infinitum. I actually did quite a few ‘exhaust repairs’ that were just replacing the hangers. Either from falling off, tearing, stretching out, or just being crap.

completely agree - almost as big a pet peeve as that ‘flying roof’ styling.  All that extra weight for nothing.
