Time to go big, by Renault standards.
The 20 replaced the 16 and was bigger but still a hatch. Yes, steel wheels with no hubcaps. That was a
thing at the time on basic models
.
*Also there was a 30. Same, except where it was different. Like the 15/17 twins the dearer model had the distinction of twin headlights. Posh.
It also had the PRV V6 engine, power steering, a strip to fill in that groove along the side and disc brakes at the back to cope with the extra go. Fancy.
For their replacements R
enault decided to split the difference and sell one model, the 25. It didn’t sell too well and was foll
owe
d by the S
afrane.
It didn’t sell too well and was followed by the V
el Satis. It didn’t sell too well (see the trend
here?) and was followed by the L
atitute which came from K
orea. It didn’t sell too well and was followed by....nothing, really.

Those wheels on the 30 are very 80s . Reminds me of the wheels that came on the original Fiat Strada/Ritmo.

Yes, and the Fuego and 18 Turbo. R
enault obviously decided to get good use from them!

Wasn’t the Safrane followed by the Laguna instead of the Vel Satis?

No, the Laguna was a smaller car. The 18 was followed by the 21 (still a common sight in France) and then by the two or three Lagunas.
So we had: 16-20/30-25-Safrane-Vel Satis (and Avantime)
and
18-21-Lagunas

Ooooh, I see, my bad. I thought the Laguna was the same size as the Safrane but it is a bit smaller.
It was a very interesting decision to have the tall and weird Vel Satis replace a line of big comfy cruisers. I just assumed the Vel Satis and Avantime were a new, special part of the lineup.
Co
ol, thanks for the info
!

I think Renault’s theory was that as a series of very ordinary hatches wasn’t selling, maybe something else would.
It didn’t!
