i saw it on Giz modo. I saw the headline and thought that there is no way this is true. so i tried it (not my photo but its close) It is pretty cool, the kids gave more of a reaction than the baking soda volcano. I didn’ t let it go too long because i’d get my ass kicked if i melted down the microwave infront of the kids.

I prefer CDs in the microwave.

Modern kids won’t even know what a CD is.

I wonder where that cutoff is. I’d assume for some it would be like records when I was kid, but CDs didn’t really take over until circa 1990, so there is some of my life where records would have been the preferred format. I’d imagine most kids today have seen CDs, and certainly seen CD players in cars, even if they weren’t used, but I don’t think it’s impossible that there are kids today who more or less have no contact with them.

This is why I keep wanting to grab an old microwave from the “dump store” where people put aside functioning* things at our dump. I’ve gotten plenty of good stuff from there, including a nice backpack, shelves, tools, etc. and there are often microwaves in there.

Things I want to try: marshmallows, light bulbs, CDs, a penny, a regular metal utensil just to see how bad it really is... come to think of it, what’s stopping me?

My kids have basically no contact with CDs. They have watched movies on DVD, which is probably their only exposure at home to disc-based media. They have seen teachers at school use CDs for music, I think. But I am certain if you ask them “how do you play music” they would answer “from daddy’s phone”

My eight and five year old were bewildered when they found mine. They asked me why I had small, shiny records.

That’s the thing- Records were the main audio media for so long that they still show up in popular culture and people who weren’t around for them still know what they are. By comparison, CDs are just a ten year blip in media storage histo ry.

Back in 1981 my parents bought a microwave for the first time, a gigantic Amana Radarange. My dad immediately set about to blowing up things in it.  Eggs, potatoes, you name it.  He’d also been known to leave carbonated drinks in freezers until they exploded.  I’m surprised he never did this with grapes.

Never knew grapes sparked in the microwave. But then again never had a logical reason to put them in a microwave in the first place.

Half my vehicle fleet is also carbureted, so I may just be a weirdo. Like carburetors, records just feel better.

My 9 year old is well schooled in the art of CD and how they can make you dear. His bedtime choice tonight was disc 1 from AC/DC Live (1992).

I still buy new release CDs...

We got our first CD player in 1986. I bought my first one in 1992. The current and sec ond one dates from 2007. Used most every day...

Someone did a cool test on what RPM a CD explodes at. I don’t recall the numbers, but the slo-mo footage was impressive.

Mythbusters did it. They determined that damaged CDs could shatter in a 52x drive but undamaged CDs failed around 23k rpm.
