My wife wanted a specific plant, in a specific pot, in a specific stand for her birthday.
Like so
no probalo, I aims to please.
Oh its the most pain in the ass plant/pot/stand ever? Sigh.
The plant is called sansevieria, and it’ s a semi-tropical succulent . She requested this plant because its apparently notoriously difficult to kill...which is good.
The only real way to kill them it seems to to have them shipped to Utah in the winter. So finding one was a pain but I did. Next I needed to find the stand and pot...easy, lots of pictures online, only none of the are the right size, or come with a pot.
So...find a pot. In California which i have to have shipped 2 day so I can get it in time to make the stand.
I get the pot last night and today is her birthday. I was up until midnight in the garage chopping, cutting, welding and grinding the stand you see. it’ s not primed or painted and won’ t be by tonight. But dammit I did it. 3 weeks of work and its finally all together. If the kids knock this over and break it I’ m going to flip.
I may end up cutting it down a little more for stability but its pretty solid.
She also requested special cakes only sold at IKEA for her birthday cake, which is on the other side of town and they don’t sell them to go so I had to work something out with the bakers. BUT SHE’LL HAVE HER PLANT AND CAKES! All in, not including the additional welding tools, about $175
She’s worth it, so that’ s good. For the record she isn’t demanding AT ALL, which is why I wanted to go to great lengths here.
1/2 .050 wall. I got to try out my new Harbor freight steel welding table and 90 degree magnets. HUGE help. massively easier.
My next project will be to modify my Y akim a round bars to tie them together and add moun ts for my traction boards and fuel packs.

That wood planter looks awfully metallic in the second photo. Hope you have a prenup.

HA she wants a metal one but the examples for it were tiny pics so I chose this one.

I think so.

looking at the photo and the stand you made, the legs are too long from the pot support to the ground. I’d definitely shorted then like you were thinking. I’d also put some rubber bits at the top, insi de the upper parts of the legs to keep it from scratching the pot. Looks awesome though.

I thought it looked unstable but its nearly a foot wide and only 10.5 inches off the ground so it feels pretty solid actually...that being said...I might flip and cut. We’ll see.

I figured you were going the “handmade with love and care” route, which really only works with gifts made by the kids.

interesting , it must be the photo, but looks like its 1.5 times the diameter off the ground

Looks good! How do you like the HF welding table? Is it the folding kind? I have a welding table that doesn’t really fit the s pace I have and I would love a different solution.
I am currently making a table and bought a 90 degree corner clamp that is pretty awesome. The magnets work well, but they metal can still move as it heats and cools. The clamp limits that, which is nice. I also recently picked up a M ilwaukee portaband saw from Ebay and mounted it on a table and it is an awesome addition. Will cut through 1/4" material with no problem and has a mitre gauge which makes s traight cuts and angles a breeze.

Nice, I’ ll take a look. Would be nice to have something that I could move around more easily that what I am currently using.

I had no idea what that plant was called, but we have one, and it should have died years ago from neglect. If its watered annually i would be shocked. Its in our guest room and ignored for months at a time. I wouldn’t be surprised if its actually dead and just somehow kept its color.

Nice!! How did you mount the port band saw to the table? Is that table something they sell specifically to convert a portable to a fixed unit?
I have the same HF welding table. Except I bought it from Eastwood so I probably paid 50% more. Seems to work fine. The adjustability and foldupness are nice.

My welding table came from my uncle. It’s 2x3 (about) and a 1/4" thick. It’s nice for small things, but not that great for anything long. And the base weighs a ton. I’ll take a look at the HF table.
The table is made by this company. Even has a foot switch, which is much more useful than I would have thought. They make a few different models for different saw models/manufacturers. I got the saw for $100 shipped and the table was a bit more than that. Mounting the saw on the table is a little fiddly (you have to futz around with it to get the blade square to the table. It’s not hard, just a bit of a pain - sometimes it takes a 10 seconds and sometimes it takes 10 minutes). That said, it’s super useful and having a miter guide is super nice. I made some other table legs that are angled and replicating the 7 degree angle was actually easy.

Thanks! I never knew such a thing existed. I might still
get a big floor bandsaw for wood. The
use vs cost/size equation
of
a floor mounted metal cutting bandsaw
was a bit questionable for me. Your link makes it a no brainer.

I stumbled on it too. There are a bunch of videos about how to make one for yourself, which would not be overly difficult. I got mine as a gift, so it was easy. It’s super useful and has really changed the way I think about making things with metal. I never would have been able to get accurate cuts for these legs without it.
dumpsterfire!

I prefer the other name, mother in law tongue, and over watering can cause root rot and kill it, don't have to ask how I know that.
