I wonder if I can grow these in Portland...I love Serrano and Fresno peppers.

Being able to go grab a fresh chile off the plant for a meal is one of life’s great, simple pleasures. I do it with my jalapeños, but they don’t last this long. My habaneros ripen their last batch to orange  in October. So, I get a bunch of what looks like little pumpkins in time for Halloween.

Never tried, nor heard of, a Fresno pepper. How would you compare it to serrano?

According to Wiki , Fresnos are milder than serranos, roughly equivalent to jalapeños .

They have a better flavor than a Jalapeno, but the heat level is on par.

We get a great variation in heat in the jalape ñ os we buy. I tend toward serrano and haba ñero when I season. I think that jalape ño is a bit strong of flavor.

I actually don’t like the jalepeno flavor myself. Serranos are ace though and about where I stop on the heat range.

The serrano has a more subtle flavor and less subtle heat. I use the Trader Joe’s habañero sauce, which is plenty hot, but only when I can stir it into what I am eating. And a little dab’ll do ya’. It has a nice flavor and isn’t vinegar-based. There’s a yummy seranno condiment that’s made by Yellow Bird Foods:

Amazon sells it. Nice flavor but not not overly hot. I use a healthy squirt of it when I’ve fixing my lunch gudge of beans and rice and such.

To put things in perspective: if you include the wind chill, it was -40 here yesterday morning.

That’s cold.

Put another way, 1,500 sq ft and 3 BR 2 BA here costs $750,000.

We got in at a certain moment that it hadn’t been like in years before or since.
