Kinja'd!!!

I present to you my desired upgrades for this summer, including, finally, the LSD.

Tires: 4x Falken Azenis RT615K+

Brakes: Hawk 5.0's on all 4 corners

Discs: Hawk slotted rotors on all 4 corners

1x Quaife ATB Differential for.... limited slip.

Further marital negotiations are required on the LSD, but... yeah. That’s what I want this summer. I want to drive more this summer than I ever have before. So maybe I need to establish a fine fund.

Total upgrade/maintenance cost is $2K USD.

Goodness it seems like you are going to reach the point where you have more in mods and parts then into the car!

Probably approaching that point.  But, this car is where I do all of my real driving.  It isn’t something I am going to dump anytime soon.

Exciting! I really do love seeing your FiST build progress. Can't wait to hear how much of5a difference the LSD makes!

Any reason you chose the quaife over the wavetrac?

We know at least one thing about t he LSD : it won’t get stuck 2 feet out the driveway in the weather we had earlier this month, like the blue hatchback I saw.

Quaife mmmmmm....

I assume you are gonna swap the diff yourself? I wanna do that too, but I need to buy another car first before I delve onto that.

What is involved with the diff swap? Is it the back end of the transmission and a couple of bolts or a complete tare-down ?

Less rotational inertia , better low end acceleration. It already has hill climb assist. Every car I’ve put a lightweight flywheel in has made the driving experience more enjoyable. Provided he has the traction and the differential will help with that, acceleration will be vastly improved in the first two or three gears.

The dual mass flywheel serves another purpose though, it prevents a significant resonance at low speed conditions (read takeoff and off throttle) where it prevents those vibrations from being passed down stream to the driveline/chassis.  This is even more prevalent in newer vehicles with the emphasis on lighter rotating assemblies and increased number of gears.  The spring rate between the two halves of the flywheel allows a two mass system to soften that resonance.  Single mass conversions can cause quite a bit of NVH and decrease driver comfort.  If he was building a race/weekend warrior I’d say take the gamble, but for the full time summer daily driver, I’d be cautious.

Good point, but a fiesta St is hardly a bastion of refinement. Honestly, the suspension and road will probably make more noise  in this car. On a more “refined” car, it’d be more noticeable. On the fiesta St? Doubtful.

I’m talking more than just noise, you’ll have hoops for headlights in the mirrors, chassis shake, and potentially vehicle hops if you lag the RPM.

I think you’re exaggerating the condition to argue your point. I’ve switched it from that style of flywheel to a lightweight on many many cars and never had it be  that bad.

For my Ranger it was $ 800 for the LSD + $300 for bearings and misc + $800 for install. but it was beyond my abilities, required specialty equipment, and not a job I’d want to do out on the street.

I’m a torsional vibrations specialist and have designed many free end crank dampers and a few torsional isolators/dual mass flywheels.  Depending on the engine type, it can be that bad.  Especially on newer engines.  Think about how cost controlled and minimalist automotive design is.  All I am saying is that a daily driven type of vehicle may want to be cautious when going single mass light weight.
