For the second consecutive year I went with a friend to the annual auto show in downtown Richmond. There weren’t as many cars this time: no exotic display, no Alfa presence, and no AMG GT from Mercedes. But there was still a lot of cool stuff. I drove this time, and since we were there on a cold Sunday morning the TL had the rooftop of the parking garage to itself at first.
Some Toyotas that were available to test drive
A Mustang display in the lobby
“1967”
Going in
Bolt
C7
LC500
RC300
GS350
Civic Si. There were quite a few regular Civics as well
Black CTR. I was hoping for a Sonic Grey one
ILX. Meh
TLX A-spec
Definitely prefer black on the A-spec seats, but the interior overall isn’t quite as good as the TL
RDX SH-AWD Advance. I liked the A-spec, but I absolutely LOVED the Advance.
E
Ok then
Neat
Mustang
White bread racing
VIR’s GT-R safety car
Accord Sport
I wasn’t a fan of the Sport interior. I liked the Touring better but not that much over it
MInis
Shark grey was a big color at this show
BRZ
I hear Oppo likes these things. Black wheels were also big here
RS5 Sportback. The door handles were interesting
S5
Dear Toyota/BMW/Magna Steyr: please make a Supra Nightshade
Regular old V90
E-class wagon
The only AMG at the show
Continental. The interior was disappointing and getting in and out of the car was confusing
Yellow. I heard Oppo likes these as well
Passport. I didn’t know these were out yet. I was disappointed in the interior
Ranger. It was locked but I signed up for a test drive
Gladiator
Crosstrek...
...with STi wheels?
Blazer
Viper
British car club
Another display of Mustangs. Pretty sure this was there last year
A-class. The display looks like two tablets fused together. Pass
Back to the GS350
Endangered species
I liked the interior, but I absolutely would have to have a different color for it.
LC VIN plate
Just a fantastic car all around
The LS is too big for me. I was all the way back in the front seat and my friend was in the back seat and said he still had tons of leg room.
Guess how I know this color chart is left over from last year
Corolla hatch
I don’t think that Sync button is supposed to be at that angle...
TRD 86
We went back over to the BRZ to compare them
VIR schedule. I plan on attending the IMSA race in August
When we got back out to the car this Giulia was on the other side of the space I parked next to.
M3
Ending with some old road signs at the exit
I still enjoyed the show despite fewer exhibits. My favorites were the RDX, the LC, and the GS350. Most disappointing were the Passport and Continental.

From your pictures I realized I missed the Civic. I’ll have to sit in one next year. We were surprised to find my brother fit in the KIA Stinger. Also, I am jelly their was no Volvo V90 or S90 at our show. Volvo had 3 S60s and 3 or 4 SUVs. I really liked the back seat of the Lincoln
Continental, but an E class was nicer up front.
I think yesterday was the 1st time I sat in the current gen. Camaro. The win
dow sill is above my chin.

I briefly sat in the Type R this year, but last year I sat in both the Si and Type R. I liked the Si’s less flashy interior better, and the seats weren’t full buckets either, which meant more comfortable for daily use. Either way the interior isn’t bad. I found the Accord’s interior more disappointing, oddly.
I was shocked to see a non-Cross Country V90 there, as I’d read they were special order only. Not sure if that’s changed.
The back seats of the Continental weren’t bad, but the front ones were, to put it mildly, strange. Combine that with the door weirdness and I’d be put off from it.
The friend I went with has a 2018 Camaro coupe. He sat in the convertible and his head was almost at the top of the windshield.

That’s not what I was going for, but yeah. There were more colors out of frame of the picture for most vehicles. I just noticed they had the Focus on there and not the Ranger.

Was the EcoSport on last year’s palette? It was only available starting late last year. The Ranger omission is odd, though.

Subaru has had an STi appearance package for the Crosstrek for a few years now. It’s basically just the wheels, a spoiler and a shift knob. Its all available from the dealer as accessories too. I have no idea if getting the package saves anything versus buying them separate after buying the car. Most dealers seem to order one for the showroom floor or out front but don’t really keep them as a regularly stocked thing.

The GS is allegedly going out to pasture once Lexus releases the AWD ES.

That’s also what I’ve read. I configured a GS when I got home, and I found it interesting that the AWD is actually slightly cheaper than the RWD.

I don’t remember, but the Focus being present is what stuck out to me.

I liked them, but ownership reviews have been mixed. Too big to feel sporty, yet too small and “sport-ish” to be truly luxurious . They used to litter the streets here back in 2014, 2015. But they're quite uncommon now.

That’s interesting. I thought the GS’s seats felt sportier than the IS’s. The IS seats were overly soft, while the GS seats were perfect. I was surprised it wasn’t the other way around. Also, when I configurated an IS and GS the way I wanted, they were almost the same price. Were I shopping I’d likely go for the GS.

I went to my Honda dealer today and sat in a Passport. While I wasn’t blown away with the interior (I hate the instrument cluster), I think I would have appreciated the amount of space behind the second row, and the V6. It’s too small for my family of 5, but I was intrigued. I actually liked the base trim best, but I’m a simple guy. I’m still driving a 16 year old Odyssey.

I think I might have liked it more had I not sat in the top-trim RDX a few minutes prior. Acura really stepped their game up with that one, and I’m cautiously optimistic that they can get some of their other vehicles up to the same level.
