So I know there is live and let diecast for model cars and stuff, is there a planeopnik? I think there is photography one. As far as I can tell none of them, including Oppositelock, are directly linked from Jalopnik or the other main Kinja pages, is there a way to find out? Am I missing something really cool? Why are these things supported but sort of kept hidden? Or are they not hidden, I am just too stupid to figure it out?

S ometimes one of these cross threads gets posted which has a few other communities listed. Not really sure if there is a definitive listing out there.

I think most communities are less active than oppo.... I looked around and they’re OK.

There was a post that had a big index of all these, but I can’t find it now. As Lancier mentioned there’s the ones from the cross thread:

Whitenoise , Hackerspace , Groupthink , Powder Room , Odeck , Tay , Oppo , Backtalk , Clashtalk , CrossTalk , Gawrker , and The Salad Bowl .

Some others I know about (a lot of these are little traveled, and mainly get cross-posted to bigger blogs):

Trains: http://therailyard.kinja.com

Planes: https://planelopnik.kinja.com/ (Or more likely, see https://oppositelock.kinja.com/tag/planelopnik )

Photography: https://photography.kinja.com/

Skiing: https://powderforward.kinja.com/

Overlanding: https://overland.kinja.com/

Anime: https://anitay.kinja.com/

Cigar Lounge:  https://cigarlounge.kinja.com/

Probably some other ones I’m not thinking of right now.

Good list - I’d add Cigar Lounge.

And I think that entire list combined might have as much traffic as Oppo.

Thanks for reminding me to post them! Myself and Story used to try to make them a weekly thing to bridge Kinja’s communities.

The Cross Threads only include the most active communities. The really niche ones aren't included.

Done.

And yeah, I’d expect much less traffic than oppo. Of the non-cross thread ones, Photography and AniTAY are the only ones that get regular posts from what I’ve seen.

As for the reasons they’re hard to find, I think Denton’s original dream was that Gawker Media would bubble up good user content to the main blogs, which would both provide free content, but also provide exposure to the niche communities. That dream died here:

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

This article was plagiarized from an article at Cracked.com. You can read the original article here . io9 offers a heartfelt apology.

It became pretty clear that relying on users to provide content was risky legally and could lose Gawker their DMCA safe harbor protection. There were other problems as well, with people on user subblogs claiming afiliation with the parent site (which is why they are all kinja.com now) As such there was a step away from the group blogs, and you can no longer create new ones.

That say, Kotaku does regular link to interesting articles on TAY with posts like this:

Today’s selection of articles from Kotaku ’s reader-run community: My Pokéball Plus Makes Me Contemplate The Horrors Of Neglected Pokémon Nintendo Came Out Swinging In Its First Direct Of 2019TAY Retro: Atari 2600 - “The Fly” [Cinema Ad, NA]

I didn’t know about that Cracked ripoff job. There were some interesting comments in that old thread.

Ye ah, it was a mess. And I don’t know how anyone could have expected otherwise. I mean, just looking at something like images, your Planelopnik History posts are probably about the best regarding image attribution and sourcing of anything that gets posted on Oppo, but there are still images that are copyrighted or unattributed (and so might be copyrighted) that make it in, presumably because they’re cool, and a non-commercial internet post on a small forum should be fair-use (it’s probably not though). Pushing such a post up the FP creates a whole other climate though, since now that’s clearly a commercial use.

Thanks, good stuff, I assume if you want to post to any of the others you have to find a moderator and get approval like you do here?

Yep, each has their own approval system (or no approval system), so getting authorship can be as easy as replying to a mod and asking (though finding out who is mod may be tricky), finding an old authorship post or you might have to wait for a new  authorship post to go up, depending on the blog.

The Kinjaverse is a vast and mysterious place, maybe the dead Avengers are hiding in there somewhere.

It seems like a bunch of people on Oppo have no idea these places exist (or of course dont give a damn).

Oppo used to be oppositelock.jalopnik.com because it started as a Jalopnik discussion forum and was linked to from jalopnik. After the Univision takeover it (and all other GMG sub-blugs) was spun off into its own thing.

t herailyard.kinja.com for trains.

I would say that I probably spend at least as much time looking for public domain photographs as I do writing. As much as I would like to, I have never used an image directly from Airliners.net. The vast majority come from Wikimedia (with citation) or governments. I have passed by many “cool” photos because I can’t use them. So while there are a handful of photos that I should have gotten permission for, the overwhelming majority are public domain.

As I say, I think you do a better job than pretty much anyone here, my apologies if I sounded a bit to flippant regarding the effort you make. By “cool”, what I really meant is that all public domain or Creative Common images were poor, or low resolution, and there was another image that was much better, which wasn’t obviously owned. Still, there are plenty images that would not be ok for a commercial publication to use. Just from the latest edition:

Lead Starship image: Unattributed. I’d guess this is owned by Beechcraft/Textron , but there are lots of other possibilities, most of which involve it being copyrighted.

Western DC-6: Unattributed. Who knows who owns this. Delta is most likely, but again there are lots of options.

The Independence: Unattributed. This is probably ok, as it is likely a US government work, but it’s certainly possible it was photographed by someone else with access.

Dresden bombing: This one is fine except you have the attribution incorrect (which would be a license violation). As I read it, Peter Poppelmann was the sculpter, while Richard Peter was the photographer.

Hugh Dowding and Spitfires: UK government works are not public domain like American ones. They are subject to Crown Copyright.

Anyway, I really doubt you are going to be sued for using any of these images, but they’d expose Jalopnik to risk if your (excellent) content was pulled up to the front page.

Yes, the Starship image is admittedly dodgy. As for the Dowding image, I’m going with this:

Kinja'd!!!

At the end of the day, I do try very, very hard to respect © and attribute wherever possible. I’m a photographer myself, and wouldn’t want my work stolen.
