Reddit’s !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! is a veritable cornucopia of the many !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! of shop lyfe. You never know what’s gonna roll in. Here’s what caught my eye this week.

Truck was delivered from a dealer to the customer (a nationwide company), who noticed the fluid leak and drove it to us (a different dealer). I found that the transmission cooling lines were missing a seal between the lines and the transmission itself from the factory! What the fuck!

Since it was the customer who found it, this means that the fluid on the ground was never noticed at the factory, it was never noted on the delivery truck, and it was never discovered at the dealer who sold the truck to the company during their PDI.

Update: The guy declined repairs (shocker) and is currently attempting to drive it 20 miles back to the sketchy used car lot he bought it from. Taking bets on how far he gets.

...it’s been like 4 hours since he took it so either he got lucky and made it or it’s stuck on the side of I-5 somewhere.

The tech says that the plug wasn’t tightened and allowed combustion gas to leak out and melt the plug and burn up the coil.

The hole for this plug was obviously destroyed, but otherwise it was okay. They’re going to try to heli-coil it

I’ve found that most suv/cars made after around 2005 require the bumper cover to come off to remove the headlight, ford just took it a step further by require the same for just bulbs

re: that CX-5 head, it sucks but porosity continues to be a problem for aluminum castings.  usually they check for that and can fix it with a polymer sealer.  possible that one wasn’t caught initially.

Who’s “they”, the factory or dealer? Do they try to catch this sort of thing as it rolls off the line, and if so, do they fix it on the spot or just ship it to the dealer with a note?

the casting plant. IIRC coolant and oil passages have to be pressure tested on a fixture in order  for a head or block to be considered “good.”

Huh. I was under the impression that the only testing that happened at the plant was to check one out of every x number of units. Are they supposed to test every one then ?

In the 5 years I worked at a gas station we never had a diver put the wrong fuel in the wrong tank. Each tank is labeled with a color code.

But we did switch one tank, and two pumps from diesel,  to no ethanol 87. Within the first month 4 people filled their diesel vehicles with gas, despite the labels being changed.

Sounds like in this case, diesel was put in a tank meant for gas. Error on the part of whoever filled that tank, not the drivers. Over 50 vehicles affected, apparently.

We test every block that comes through. We get porosity pretty frequently. We remove the head, and send it back to machine shop for either repair or recycle.
