I was called a racist yesterday. Apparently, I hate Mexicans. I was somewhat taken aback by the news, and had to listen to a little music to even out my emotions.
I was invited to speak at an upcoming conference . Apparently, and to the embarrassment of the organization holding the conference, a major sponsor who wanted me there so they could meet me and retain me was told by their lawyer that I am a racist who hates Mexicans. So now they don’t want me there. The best part is that they asked if they could have one of my other attorneys because they still want the presentation and they still want to hire the firm. Yes, they also still want to slap my logo all over the place for marketing .
I was discussing this with the attorney who will be presenting (a 50 year old Mexican woman who worked her way from secretary to lawyer , daughter of a farm worker who snuck her infant daughters across the border , who I hired because I am a bigot) and she showed me her texts with the conference organizer. He told her he had been to my office, and for a guy who hates Mexicans I seem to hire and do business with them a lot. I laughed.
When I told my wife, she said, “They should go to your old firm. Your partners only wanted to hire pretty little blond girls so they could harass them. ”
Don’t fuck with Mrs. IM. She doesn’t play around.

Well I just won an Auction on a 2007 Dodge Ram regular cab short bed I bid on as a whim, now I need to figure out how to pay for it and then go see what I bought for my $3000.00, this was either the most brilliant
purchase I have ever made or the dumbest.

What was the basis for this lawyer saying you were racist?? And why did the organization balk at the unsubstantiated rumor that you might be, despite your record of involvement?? Is the liar/lawyer who said that getting replaced by your firm or something?

I admire your ability to piss people off and shrug it off like it was nothing.
I’ve learned that nothing makes a person more angry than being faced with a truth they either didn’t recognize or wanted to ignore. For example, I was in meeting several months ago where we were discussing the policies and procedures for a program to build housing. I was roped in at the last minute, so I didn’t know all of the players in the room. Part of the draft policy disallowed new construction in the 100-yr floodplain (good) but said nothing about the 500-yr floodplain (bad) or the areas outside of the official floodplain which flooded during Hurricane Harvey (really bad). When we got to that part of the presentation, I brought it up.
A woman in the room was fine with allowing construction in the previously-flooded areas as long as it met code and the building was elevated above the last flood height. The first problem is that the code says nothing about areas outside the defined floodplain that flooded during Harvey. The second problem i s that the code only speaks to the building. In other words, the property will flood and the building will be fine, but anything else at ground level - cars, lawn equipment, etc. - will be drowned.
We were talking about low income housing here. So, I pointed out that the poorest people would still experience a significant loss, possibly losing their transportation. She countered by saying they would be able to move their belongings before the flood came. I pointed out that the flood prior to Harvey came after midnight and many people awoke to flooded homes.
That’s when she said that they were more concerned about providing housing and if they put such a tight restriction on where developers could build, there would be no place to build. I told her that was a huge mistake and that policy would put poor people at risk.
She put her foot down and said they weren’t going to modify the policy.
It wasn’t until after the meeting that I learned she is the director of the program for the county.
I haven’t been invited back to any of their meetings.
