This car is entirely new to me, but reminds me quite a bit of my beloved del Sol. I know better than to open Craigslist after midnight, but here we are.

Not a big fan of this color scheme, but it certainly sounds like the current owner has gone to great lengths to take proper care of it. Intriguing.

And then I remember I have a bad back and probably can no longer wrangle that del Sol hard top. Sad.

That Fiat is tiny. Saw one last year, weaving in and out of traffic on the Kennedy near OHare at rush hour. Pretty sure the driver had a death wish.

There was a bright green one that parked across from my house in the late 70s. I was obsessed with it. I thought it looked like something out of Star Wars. Much later , I learned that it basically had a sewing machine for a motor. But it’s still a sharp car.

That sounds like a hell of a lot of fun per dollar if it’s really rust free. These things handle like you wouldn’t believe, and the engine mods will make a big difference.

Oppo has an X1/9! Oppo Meet Wales was a bit unkind to it :

Though it did earn a sticker:

And it got fixed !

There is one that color in a junk yard near me. Well about 30 percent of it. I’ve thought about going and getting it’s Bertone badges.

Was it manufactured by Fiat or Bertone?

Wiki says it was manufactured by FiST until 81 and then by Bertone 82 on. Weird

I would have that idiot Fiat over the Honda anyway. Back in the day every good eccentric uncle had an X19 and swore blind that it was brilliant...and I so wanted to be an eccentric uncle.

Fiat ceased production of both the X1/9 and 124 Sport Spider in 81. Malcolm Bricklin (of Subaru of America, the Bricklin SV-1, and Yugos) made a deal with Bertone to keep up production for several more years but under the Bertone brand. He did similar with the now Pininfarina Spider Azzur a.

It means for a brief period in the mid-80s you had a choice of three affordable mid-engine cars at once, the MR2, Fiero, and the X1/9!

My dad bought one new in 1974 and still has it. Mid engine and by all accounts you would be hard pressed to find a better handling and fun to drive car. No horsepower but it’s not like it needed much.

AT the very least that gold is very of its time.

Wonder if someone has a kit for the Del Sol power roof option available in other markets? I guess you could just never bother with and and just have a coupe?

I would note that the X1/9 is also a targa.

I quite like that X1/9! Would make a fun little car...lots of stories of them being unreliable, but they don’t seem that bad and wouldn’t be too hard to work on! Parts aren’t too hard to find either!

Ooooh, I remember those. Sadly they didn't like a damp climate because Fiat.

Yeah, I’d have to try the Fiat to see how heavy it is.

I’m not particularly interested in anything I can’t remoce the top on, although the power rear window on the del Sol is a great feature independently of the top.
