Well apparently I can’t post a link here. I’ll try again in the comments.

Crews in Albany, NY recently uncovered an abandoned section of water main. What makes it interesting is that it’s a main made from a hollowed out log that dates back to the 18th century. While this main was no longer in use there are areas of the country that occasionally uncover wooden mains that are still in service.

The reason they were in the area is interesting for its own reason. They had recently discovered a building in the area was never connected to the city sewer system that was installed in 1913. Instead it was discharging it’s waste straight to the river for over 100 years; oops.

Well, guess you’ll have to take my word for it. I can’t add a link here either.

I believe you.  It’s not like you made a crazy claim, like you had chicken parm for lunch or something.

Two or three years ago, a similar line was found under Main St. in Burlington, VT. Just a hollowed out log. The news came, then they got a different truck and hauled it off to a museum.

Cr ap, I just checked and it was Nov. 2014. Time  flies.

I’m ashamed to admit I have never made chicken parm. I have made eggplant parm on numerous occasions.

I almost mentioned a wooden main that was found near me. I thought it was around 3-5 years ago. Then I realized the person I know that was on the crew that found it retired almost 10 years ago.

I’ve never made eggplant parm, but I would think it’s much the same (?)

They’ve been finding similar lines around here that are ~100 years old.  It makes you realize how much unmarked stuff is underground.  I keep wondering what there is for ground-penetrating radar or other technologies for looking underground without digging.  Imagine creating a Google Earth of the Underground(tm).  That data would be worth a small fortune.

I can’t imagine there being much difference. You might have to cook chicken parm longer since under cooked  chicken has more disturbing consequences than under cooked eggplant.

Here in our ritzy community, we don’t have peasant logs for water mains. We have sandstone and brick.

And lead.

The company I worked for had planned to purchase a ground penetrating radar unit. They actually bought two for other locations, but they rarely got used and are extremely expensive to have gathering dust.

I almost wish they’d bought it because I was one of the people they were considering sending to the training on how to use it.

That’s pretty wild! My cousin was working on a street repair job in Michigan a few years back that had numerous over-runs because they kept running into WW2-era Orangeburg pipe ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orangeburg_pipe ) that’s basically paper mache made with tar.

From what he said, that log pipe looks to be in better shape...
