Mrs. IM needs a car! The QX60 as expected, is kaput. She wants to downsize to a small SUV, wagon, or sedan, and my enjoyment of the GTI has convinced her to drop out of the luxury segment because it ain’t worth the money. She is also interested in a manual to keep her more engaged. We will likely be leasing, but a purchase is possible. So it is time for Oppo to chime in.

Kinja'd!!!

I would prefer to put down no more than $7500, but I could prefer to keep it at $5k or so. I could probably come up with $10k if I reeeally needed to. Budget for payment is up to about $600 per month, but I like to keep it less. Which makes me think about a purchase price budget of around $30-$40k.

Whaddaya got, Oppo?

not manuel but XC60 is my go to answer for this... even with not much down you should be able to lease one around $500ish a month. Dunno how it is over there but the leasing is cheaper than an XC40

I don’t think you’ll have much luck leasing one of those.

Golf Sportwagen/Alltrack is a solid sensible choice, if not GTI manual which you already have in your household. Hitting the uppermost edge of your budget is a Golf R manual. Used ones are around the $30-35K range.

I suggested an Accord Sport 2.0T manual in that other thread you posted a day or two back, excellent car and I would vouch for it even if I have driven only the 10 speed auto

Genesis G70 Manual is around $38K and from what I’ve read and seen it’s a good car

Other compact car options- Civic Si, Hyundai Elantra GT sport (Hatch or Sedan )

$30 -40k? Have you considered a used Lotus Elise? That’s definitely a downsize for her!

I’m sorry to hear about the fate of the Infinity.

New: My vote goes to the CX-5. Its the only Crossover I like in the price range.

CPO: Lexus RX350, GS 350 or Acura MDX. Reliable and luxurious cars at a ~20% discount and factory warranty? Can’t go wrong with that.

Used and fun: If you want to be a little adventurous, get a E39 540i Wagon. Or an E Class Wagon. An amazing example can be had for $10k - $ 15k and you can budget ~ $5k in upgrades/ service/maintenance over the next 3 years. That would make i t the nicest BMW/Benz wagon on earth.

Since getting an E39, I’ve been preaching about it to everyone. So I can’t let this occasion pass lol

I hear the Subaru automatic braking and safety features are pretty top notch, ditto Volvo. Unfortunately I’m not sure either are available with a manual (does Volvo even sell manual cars anymore?!) but don’t quote me on that.

If you’re looking to save some money on a lease, cars with a high resale are going to be a lot cheaper. My boss is shopping around and stuff like the Buick TourX is $500-$600/mo, but a Civic Si is $220/mo.

For small SUVs the Renegade is an interesting choice and can be had in manual, but the power isn’t great. It is, however, a fun little car. I’m a fan of the Kia Soul, but you have to get the poverty spec one to get it in manual, which is... annoying. Also would probably feel like a massive step down from the Infinity. The Volvo XC40 comes to mind as well. Seems like that has been really well reviewed of late and I think they look good. No manual though.

For wagons and hatches, I hate to say it but she may like the Buick TourX. Other options are, of course, Subaru. All of them. Also a lot of the Dieselgate Jetta wagons are hitting the market (at least here) and seem to be going for decent (10-14k) prices. Can be had in pretty much any spec you want, including manual. The Si might be a little too “boy racer” for her, but as mentioned above the lease deals on these are pretty insane and in liftback spec they seem like they’d be a great car.

Glad to hear Mrs IM is OK and glad to hear another QX is off the road. (I hate those things, though mostly the bigly ones.)

Yeah, I think importing kills the deal. By the time you have a nice one, you might as well buy a C30, it lacks that ‘80s goodness, but would be faster, safer, and not bad looking itself.

Meets all requirements, as long as you don’t go too stupid with the options. Plus, high-vis paint will make people less likely to crash into you.

Here are some auto choices and manual choices after:

Kia Stinger, Charger Scat Pack (good lease deals from what I remember), Alfa Giulia (who cares about reliability on a lease? ), any of those beautiful volvos, probably a bunch of other things I’m forgetting haha

WRX, The Genesis everyone is talking about, Mustang (your kids are grown, right?), the new GLI, and I don’t really know what else.

Oh, a used GTO ;)

I asked a sports sedan question a while back. Might be some good answers in there: https://oppositelock.kinja.com/sports-sedans-a-question-1829375878

I say give the new legacy turbo a look. Eyesight is standard, it’s quick and the Subarus handle great when tossed around. Resale is great, so if she wants the wagon th e legacy can be sold for the outback.

There new legacy looks great on the inside as well.

It’s safer, the global platform used in the  Crosstrek is used in the new legacy. https://www.forbes.com/sites/peterlyon/2017/05/31/how-safe-is-the-new-subaru-xv-crossover-good-enough-to-win-multiple-awards/#4c4a565b3d32

Mrs. MINIGTI drives the GTI mostly (Manaul Mk6) and I’m hopping to keep it for a while, but my boss who is a VW fanboy planted an idea. He said he heard refurbished dieselgate sports wagon TDI are becoming available for cheap - with included 100k power train warranties. I’m not really in love with the styling but it could be a sensible trade.

Also, speaking of Mrs. IM, where are the Cressida posts I was promised?

Normally, I would’t post on these subjects because my thoughts are absolute garbage, but has the missus thought about the VW Arteon? Supposedly as good as any other Vee-Dub with the 2.0 turbo, but slightly more refined and not as maintenance-prone as a comparable Audi or BMW.

VW has really gone the Hyundai route with their warranty’s to garner good will.  The commercials I see for their regular fleet are 6 year/72k. When I was looking for a Golf to replace my Mk4 Golf they were only 3 year/50k (I think).
