To be fair, you have to be a very dedicated enthusiast to appreciate the Mazda Miata. The acceleration is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of driving manuelle most of the fun will go over a typical driver’s head. There’s also the Miata’s “slow-car-fast” outlook, which is deftly woven into its characterization- its driving mechanics draw heavily from classic British roadsters, for instance. The enthusiasts understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of its driving feel, to realise that it’s not just fun - it says something deep about AUTOMOTIVE HISTORY. As a consequence people who dislike the Miata truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn’t appreciate, for instance, the meaning of Mazda’s existential philosophy of “Jinba Ittai”, which itself is a Japanese term for “the fusion of horse and rider”. I’m smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated Toyota-driving simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Masakatsu Kato’s automotive genius unfolds itself around them as they step on the gas. What fools.. how I pity them. And yes, by the way, i DO have a Miata tattoo. And no, you cannot see it. It’s for the ladies’ eyes only- and even then they have to demonstrate that they have a car that’s roughly as driver-oriented as my own (preferably less so) beforehand. Nothin personal kid
Happy Miatalentines day!

I’d just agree with the ide that the Miata is balanced. It has as much power as it needs.
And if you want more you can swap in an LS yer damn self ;)

Here’s the thing. You said a “Miata is a MX-5.”
Is it in the same family? Yes. No one’s arguing that.
As someone who is a scientist who studies MX-5s, I am telling you, specifically, in science, no one calls Miatas MX-5s. If you want to be “specific” like you said, then you shouldn’t either. They’re not the same thing.
If you’re saying “MX-5 family” you’re referring to the taxonomic grouping of N, which includes things from Roadster to 124s to RFs.
So your reasoning for calling a Miata a MX-5 is because random people “call the convertible ones MX-5s?” Let’s get S2000s and Elans in there, then, too.
Also, calling a truck a ute or a pickup ? It’s not one or the other, that’s not how taxonomy works. They’re both. A Miata is a M iata and a member of the N family. But that’s not what you said. You said a Miata is a MX-5 , which is not true unless you’re okay with calling all members of the N family MX-5s , which means you’d call RFs , Roadsters , and 124s MX-5s , too. Which you said you don’t.
It’s okay to just admit you’re wrong, you know?

Hey, joke if you want, an LS swapped Miata is the real modern take on the AC Shelby Cobra.
Not that “Viper” thing.

If you’ve never driven a Miata, then you may have a hard time understanding, but I’ll start with the phrase “It’s more fun to drive a slow car fast than it is to drive a fast car slow.” No, the Miata is not going to win any races in a straight line or stop light to stop light. My 2003 Miata LS 1.8L has 142 horsepower, and does 0–60 in approximately in 7.5–8.0 seconds. Certainly not a breakneck speed by any stretch of the imagination. However, the car only weighs ~2300lbs, and has 50/50 weight distribution with a nice quick steering ratio that is very responsive. With minor modifications, the Miata can keep up with much faster vehicles around a standard race track. The power-to-weight ratio of 16.0 on my 2003 NB Miata is in line with the 6-Cylinder Mustang from that same year, and only a little off the 13.0 power-to-weight ratio of the Mustang GT from that year. Newer Miatas such as the NC and ND have even better power-to-weight ratios.
The gearbox is nearly perfect in these cars. The gearshift is very direct, smooth, and has been described by others, as well as myself, as being like a “toggle switch.” Even though you may not be screaming along at 100MPH, the gearbox is so smooth and satisfying that you won’t care.
The openness of the Miata is perhaps one of its best features. I’m 60 and my head sticks several inches above the windshield, and the low doors provide a feeling of openness and freedom that must be experienced to be felt.
Overall, I think Chris Rowe did a great job of describing the Miata. It is a driver’s car that must be experienced to be understood and appreciated. You never feel disconnected from the Miata. On the contrary, the Miata always lets you know exactly what it is doing, and becuase of this, they tend to be very forgiving when pushed to the limits. This makes them fun, since they can be driven at the limit by even a novice driver. At the edge of their adhesion around corners, the car tends towards very mild understeer, which can be resolved by rotating the car with the throttle, since it is RWD. It is very hard to get into trouble in a corner driving a Miata.
If you’ve never driven a Miata, take a spin in one. You will be amazed at how connected to the road you feel, and how direct the car is. And as an added bonus, they are relatively easy to find for affordable prices, which makes the price per fun factor that much more appealing. Miata really is always the answer!
