Hi all!
I was just playing around the Automation: The Game and BeamNG game duo (look them up if you haven’t - Automation lets you design a car from scratch in amazing detail and then export it to the BeamNG game for you to drive around!)
As you all know, I love quirky cars, so I was working on my beige communist lumpmobile called the Gazelle...
...
which is rear-engined, rear-wheel-drive (I sortof thought of it as a classic Skoda ripoff). The only option the game has for rear-mounted engines is rear longitudinal. Makes sense. But that got me to wondering, are there any RR cars that ever had a rear-mounted TRANSVERSE engine with rear wheel drive?
Now, I don’t mean MID-rear-engined, I mean REAR engined with a transverse placement. I can’t think of any and some basic and half-hearted Google searching doesn’t seem to be finding anything
...?

Sounds like you need Torch. He might know.

There are any number of buses configured that way. Cars, can’t really think of anything. The Smart 453 is right on the edge.

I believe the logical layout for a transverse engine places the axles behind the engine block. I'm sure there have been vehicles with a transverse engine with the engine behind the axles but I don't think moving the engine back a foot is enough for them to specify rear engine instead of mid.

It would appear that the MG F/TF is dancing on the edge.
In fact, I’m prepared to call its popular description as “mid” bullshit. The centerline is clearly behind the rear axle.

I found one, and it is usually described as mid-engined. Which is nonsense, because any cars with a transverse engine at all ahead of the front wheels is described as front-engined. Sure, it’ll be kind of like a mid-engined car under braking, but much more rear engined under acceleration, so...
The logical layout for a transverse engine is with axle either ahead or behind rather than directly under, and most people want a trunk and don’t mind not having volvo-style ski-holes through from the trunk, so wheels under trunk, engine behind seats is the name of the game - but mechanically it doesn’t have to be.
Out, but with a W - has found the answer

The engine in the MR2 Roadster sits pretty much on top of the axle.

That’s in the rear!
