I have a love for oddball racing prototypes, especially those with interesting powertrain layouts (Panoz LMP-1, Nissan GT-R LM Nismo, Ford Mustang IMSA GTP). This thing is in a league of its own though.

“ Herb Adams was not like most designers. His solution to the tunnel problem was as simple as it was completely insane. Rather than move the tunnels around the engine and driver, he moved the engine and driver around the tunnel. By placing the car’s key components on either side of the chassis, he created the room for a giant venturi tunnel down the middle.”

That was such a cool era in racing. Thanks for the carmrades link— hadn’t seen them before, and there are a bunch of fun articles, lots of forgotten racing weirdos. Right up my Strasse.

Boy, I had forgotten about Herb Adams VSE. I’ve got a couple of his old catalogs somewhere in my piles of old junk. I was a Pontiac guy back in the day and his catalog was full of race and suspension equipment. I wasn’t aware of his Escort Chevy. However, the back of the catalog featured design sketches of his Silverbird race car which seems to have come in 2nd at Laguna Seca around 78-79.

I love the dare to be different designs, even if they didn’t pan out.
