I suppose that’s a testament of solid state.

My parents had a Marantz receiver when I was growing up. I still love their aesthetics. All that brushed metal, and needle dials... *chef kiss* fantastico

Yep, tossing your tube amp out of a moving vehicle will end in tears and a lot of broken glass.

Yeah for sure, the colors, fonts, lights, the feel of the switchgear are just not something you get even with a high end receiver today. I especially love the gyro-touch tuner on the receivers.

The 70s Marantz stuff also puts out a unique sound that just puts me in a better mood.

I remember the top ad from magazines back in the day. My brother had a similar amp at the time. I loved that tuning wheel.

Does anybody listen to the radio at home any more?

I have one that needs to be recapped. I’m setting up a 70s rec room in my house except for the wood paneling of course.

I do quite frequently, it’s how I relax. But then I’ve been accused of being born 40 years too late

I only listen in the car. At home, I listen to CDs, which I still call “records.”

My dad is still running his Pioneer from the same era. Something about those old component systems.

I love the old stereos, Marantz, Pioneer, Sansui, Akai etc. Wish I would have picked a nice set up when they were being sold at garage sales for $20. Love that stuff, also vintage car stereos from the same era are awesome.

It really depends, here in DC, never. It’s a radio wasteland. In Seattle, I’d listen all the time, because you’d either hear great new music or learn something that you wouldn’t have if you’d listened to XM or Pandora.

Yeah the materials, the heavy switchgear, everything is great.

Yeah the car stereos were pretty neat, I liked the early Supertuners from Pioneer:

Awesome, I love this plan.  I gotta set up my 1040, it’s still boxed up after the move.   And my SR-2000 is having FM Stereo issues I gotta diagnose.

There is one station here in Austin, KUTX, that plays a very eclectic mix of more obscure (to me) pop music. I don’t like everything they play, but it’s almost always  something I’ve never heard before. And that is very refreshing.

I have to admit, the one piece of Carver gear I owned, my first non-Diskman CD player, was a complete piece of crap. It  did look cool, all rack mount goodness but it was terrible even for 1986.

Apparently you s hould have bought the Carver amp and gone to Montgomery Ward for the CD player.

They come up pretty cheap from time to time, but these old amps aren’t great for home theater.   For music alone they’re great, but you really need a newer amp to play nice with the newer TVs.

Mine was a lesser model and I burnt out the output transistors, had it repaired once, burnt them out a second time, and just used it as a tuner after that.

I have a nice iLuv clock radio kind of thingy that has receives HD Radio, and that’s what I use most of the time to listen to jazz. In the car I usually listen to an eclectic station that plays a little bit of everything, including a great 2-hour block of Brazilian music on Mondays at noon. These days I tend to listen to the programs via streaming since I’m usually at work when the stuff I want to hear is playing...

Yep that’s still why I listen to radio, though not FM. This is usually a good show, he used to do several in-flight audio channels for Air Canada which were amazing (especially the one about early alternative) - I wish I could find them online. Anyways - here’s the link:

He also does another podcast called Geeksn’Beats that’s also pretty entertaining:

The old Concords are pretty neat, they tried to build them like a home tuner/cassette, and put a lot of switches and buttons on them.

The old Supertuner is pretty cool with the round dial. I think they kind of kickstarted the whole aftermarket radio/cassette movement back in the day with that one.

I have a later analog pioneer in one of my cars, bought it new old stock a few years back.

Kinja'd!!!

And below is a pretty plain Jane but period correct RCA I put in my SAAB Sonett, it was about the only thing that fit, both sadly gone now.

My oldest son is very into the music scene. Don’t think he has ever listened to the radio much, although he has done some deejay work. Several years ago I asked him how he heard new music without listening to the radio. I didn’t really understand how it all worked other than looking up old songs I liked on YouTube.

Some of my best m emories are going to sleep with 70s FM ”album oriented rock” coming from an old tube table top radio in my brother’s room.  I also remember listening to the radio all night to hear that one new song you liked.

I don’t listen to music on the radio much anymore, somewhere around the turn of the century (man does that make me sound old) the latest stuff on the radio stopped appealing to me.  I am slowly getting Spotify to learn what I like.

My main speakers are still an old pair of ADS L690s my dad bought back in the 80s, but I’ll hopefully be upgrading to a set of Klipsch.    RP -6000F fairly soon, along with a new Marantz receiver. Then I’ll put the ADS in the shop and finally have a decent sound system there.

I wouldn’t want to try and figure that Concord out while driving, but it looks good when stopped!

Oh man that Pioneer is perfect for a TR6, I love it. Sorry to hear about the Saab, I love the look of the Sonetts, and that install looks factory .

I have a great set of AAL floor speakers from the 80s, fake wood and all. I love them, but I can’t figure out how to fit them into my living room setup and string  the wires. They’re hooked up to a JVC component system.

I should have specified. My “home theater” is pretty much just for listening to music. If I wanted to integrate it, it wouldn’t be too hard. My TV is old enough to have analog outs but I could figure that out either way. Audio is much more important to me than video.

That is interesting—I was and still am a music lover with pretty broad tastes. So I have this internal ongoing debate, did the music change or have I. Someone said there was a study done that most people lose interest in popular music by their early 30s, I dont know if I totally buy that, I lasted much longer than that, but eventually interest died.  Still listen to all sorts of stuff from the fifties (before I was born, not that old) to about 2000 or so.

Marantz made some seriously good stuff. I think my dad has a 2270 on a shelf some where (he has a m cintosh tuner in the in-use system).

Yeah up till right around 1980. The 2270 is worth quite a bit even needing work.

Ha as much as I like Marantz I’d run the McIntosh too...
