How do most of you people deal with this as a regular occurrence? I thought about taking the ST out and testing the lights, but I’m running fairly bald old all seasons until spring’s tire replacement, so decided against it.

We got.... I dunno 10-15cm? (6inches).

The claims are going to roll in thick today.

Speaking for rural PA, they had a robust plowing system in place. Even out in the sticks, you wouldn’t have to wait more than a few hours for nearly all the roads to be cleared.

In Portland, I think we have like 2 plows, and they just do highway clearing.

Snow tires, a snow blower, and a bit of insanity

step 1: dedicated snow tires. not ‘winter performance tires’ snow tires.
step 2: AWD helps.
step 3: TCS + ESP off
step 4: Initoal D music playlist

...

DRIFTOOOOOO

jokes aside, anywhere that usually get a solid amount of snow has a fair solid snow plow system in place. but Snows and a touch of brain power helps

Places that get it regularly are better at dealing with it. Here, the plows are working round the clock when it s nows. He ll, a plow just drove down my street spreading salt and the road is clear ( but supposed to get bad in abou t 9 hours).

Make sure you’re gassed up and tires are in good shape, then do the following:

- in traffic, drive slow and be careful, because you’re surrounded by drunken lemurs

- where there’s no traffic, hoon away- besides being great fun, you’ll learn more about car control

Oh and stay off the roads during rush hour when it’s snowing. That’s a shitshow.

Snow tires a car you don’t care about and sideways.

Just drive. One of the few normal cars (not SUV/CUV) out early yesterday, nothing but all-seasons, simply paid attention and had no issues:

Just another part of life in New England. We make it work. Plus, as someone else has mentioned, it helps when your municipality is properly equipped to handle it.

All we really do is put snow tires on the cars in mid November. I also have a really good snow blower and a heated (somewhat heated) garage. The main car is a subaru outback that can go through massive amounts of snow before getting stuck. My mazda is good for 8" of snow or so but we rarely get more than 4-6" at a time. The county, city and state all have their own plow crews, the county plow came by my house this morning around 7:30 so it was scraped down to ice and graveled when I went to work.

Buffalo NY area born and raised.  We do it by just taking it slow when we have to drive somewhere, and we make sure we have good tires to get there.  I drive about 16 miles one way to work, sometimes it takes 15 mins, a couple of times it has taken almost an hour.  It all depends on the weather and the condition of the roads.  I usually get going to work before the plows are even out, so I find a set of tracks and follow them.  For as much snow as we get, It’s really only bad for driving a handful of days out of the winter.  The rest of the time it’s bearable, just spend more time inside with the lady and her kids.

I try to keep away from other “drivers” (sarcastic quotes) when possible. I remember an Escape yesterday that I made sure to keep away from, erratic clueless driving on compact snow.  Also a California-plated Camry on a fairly clear road was being more scary than the low ability one would associate with it.

Uh, that’s not rural PA. That’s semi-rural PA.

I used to live in truly rural PA. We had yellow signs on many roads warning that they were not maintained or plowed. They also did not use salt in the county I lived in, only fly-ash on the state highways and grit.

Solution?

We put snow tires on in Oct and get the shovels out.

I’m more worried about the million other people around you who have know idea how to drive in the snow.

Good luck with that, it’s going to be an entertaining day..

How do most of you people deal with this as a regular occurrence?

When it happens once every 5 years, it can be catastrophic if most aren’t prepared with how to deal. When it happens weekly for 4 months out of the year, it becomes a part of life and you learn to adapt and (hopefully) enjoy it.

I guess i t just comes naturally after a while. You just kinda loo k out the window and see how much snow is on the ground, and whether or not the road has been plowed yet. Then you take into account what kind of car you have, its ground clearance and the condition of the tires. If you decide to head out on the road after that, carefully test the traction when approaching or accelerating from a stop, and figure out how slowly you need to take the commute. At least that’s how I go about it. There’s a point at which you just know to stay home.

“Semi Rural”

Ok, I guess that’s fair, we did have a few thousand people in the town.

Oh yeah. That’s definitely semi-rural.

Where I lived, the closest “big” town had a population of a whole 2,600 at the time (down to ~2,300.) The next closest town with a population over 500 was... uh... I think Shinglehouse, PA about 45 minutes away. I didn’t have a town over 250 population for more than 10 miles in any direction. Total population for the entire county of 1,082mi^2 was less than 19 ,000.

The city I live in currently has a population of about 28,000 in 5.83mi^2.
