Was in a McDonalds parking lot earlier today.

Before leaving, I decided to check my tire pressures as I haven’t done it in a while and I wasn’t in a hurry.

A guy with an F250 pulls in 2 spots over, gets out of his truck and goes into the McDs... and leaves his truck running... with his smelly diesel exhaust aimed right at my car.

I could barely breathe.

I was left thinking these old pre-emission diesels are far more deserving of getting recalled and crushed than the GM EV1 ever was.

I look forward to the day all (or almost all) the pre-emissions diesel vehicles are retired.

Update: And I’m looking forward to the future when the Tesla Semi and other electric commercial trucks start killing the heavy duty diesel market.

And I’m looking forward to hearing bro-dozers and coal rollers crying about the death of their beloved diesels.

Update 2: And I look forward to seeing more and more coal power plants getting shut down and replaced with other solutions like natural gas!!

Update 3: And it will be awesome when the electric Ford F-150 Ford is working on comes out. And that 4 cyl hybrid power train in the Wrangler? Just a matter of time before the Ram pickup trucks go hybrid like a Prius... which will be GLORIOUS!!!

Update 4: I forgot to mention GM... who will likely take their smaller pickup trucks and give them a proper FWD BEV powertrain like they did in the late 1990s with !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!

They could easily do that again today using the powertrain out of the Chevy Bolt... and cancel the diesel version at the same time since the electric powertrain has more torque at lower rpm and has better EPA fuel economy!!!

“are far more deserving of getting recalled and crushed than the GM EV1 ever was.”

that was due to legislation that any vehicle sold needs to have parts supplied nationwide for x years . Same as to why BMEW killed the Active E.

Nah... that line is bullshit.

I get an instant headache from the fumes of those old trucks. There's a guy who lives near me with a new diesel, that clearly has illegally removed all the emission equipment (he has giant stacks coming up through the bed). I got stuck behind him for one block, and that's all it took. I would like to smash his face with a shovel.

Lmao! I drive a 2006 Cummins and it puts off quite a bit of fumes. The funny thing is the engine blew recently and I paid nearly 15, 000 to get it back on the road. So, as long as there’s people like you that can’t wait for these things to die and be crushed, there are people like me that will revive them and be the cause of “ headaches” for another 500,000 miles. Go find something else to complain about, and if you can’t stomach the smell of a diesel for one block you probably can’t grip a shovel tight enough to hit anyone in the face with it.

I agree with you on the assholes that blow the black smoke on people. It’s t hose guys that I even want to get out and break their fucking nose but the pre-e mission diesel isn’t going anywhere. I bought a 1999 F- 350 7.3 L turbo diesel 6- spd with 350,000 miles at one year ago and since then I’ve had it another 100,000 and I’m getting ready to put a new clutch in it and literally, I will sell 2-3 of my cars to pay to keep this truck running. It is a feeling I can’t describe, I absolutely love driving this truck with a passion even though it is slow as hell and basically a 4x4 flatbed dually work truck but this truck will be running long after I’m dead and I’m 36 years old. I have a new to me, 2004 Volvo C70 2.4 L LPT (low-pressure turbo). It is a very nice car to drive with all the creature comforts heated leather seats etc and I literally cannot wait to get back into my truck and drive it daily. I guess the only good thing out of all this is that 90% of most of the black smoke blowing assholes have chipped the shit out of their diesels and they will be blowing up, some very soon, because these guys put way too big of injectors on them to be able to blow all that black smoke and they don’t realize that you got to do other stuff to keep the whole engine in balance. that’s why I’m glad their engines will be toast soon. M y truck doesn’t blow any black smoke, because I agree with you that shit is annoying that’s why I left my truck stock.

Look, I respect your opinion, but frankly, I think you are pretty misinformed, and generalizing pretty hardcore, which annoys me.

Yo u say that the smell annoys you and that those of us that drive these diesels should be rid of them. Yep, my diesels emissions, 2002 F350 7.3l, are definitely worse than a gas, or post urea treatment era diesels. And yep, they’re a little smelly.

However I can guarantee that overall my usage and “carbon footprint” is significantly better than yours, and any of those stupid EV trucks. Why? Oh, hey.. have you seen how bad lithium mines are for the environment? ( https://www.thenational.ae/business/technology/darker-side-of-electric-cars-in-spotlight-1.676999 ) ( https://www.wired.co.uk/article/lithium-batteries-environment-impact ) and by the way, your prius (or any other current ev) has to have its lithium batteries replaced every 10 years AT BEST). Talk about your consumable resources.

Hell, a small kit and some computer adjustments and my pre-emmisions diesel can run on McDonald’s fryer fat. Talk about sustainable.

How many cars/vehicles have you o wned since 2004? I’ve owned 1. Regular maintenance, plus a few smaller items here and there, and my diesel is running like a champ 15 years later and 350k miles. It’s my only vehicle, and I bet, if you count up the environmental cost of your 2,3, maybe 4 vehicles in that time, that would be a massive environmental impact. Pre-emmissions die sels c an , and regularly do last that long and longer. Maybe, if as a society we were less concerned with flashy, with new, and put more emphasis on longevity and reliability , we’d be in a significantly better place with our environment.

Why do you think you see so many of these? Because they last. They’re reliable, day after day, year after year, because they were built to be able to last until the damn sky falls.

I, and a good number of other diesel ow ners t hink th ose asshats who go ou t a nd “roll coal” are exactly that, asshats. Do I have stacks? No. Do I have a 4" exhaust, upgraded turbo, and a chip? Yep. Why? Cause I went from 12 mpg without all that to 15 with. Course, I don’t drive like an asshole either. Slow and steady, always wins the race.

Ta ke your opinion, and, with all respect, shove it up your ass.

A lot of those diesel trucks get much better mileage than the gas counterparts. I drive a 2005 2500hd gas it gets 9 mpg my brother has a 1999 ram 3500 diesel he gets over 20 mpg. We work our trucks sometimes harder than they should be 60 hours straight plowing snow, throwing 2 tons of salt on a 3/4 ton truck, towing 2-3 cars a few hours back to the shop. Electrics are a long way off from this type of work. Some people don’t need them they are  just “ cool” for them. But in most situations it is good to have them on the road. And shut ting it off then right back on would put out more burnt fuel than leaving it running. Good thing he didn't start it when you car door was open.

This is the finest thing I’ve ever read. No one realizes how bad for the environment electric cars are. Yes they cut down on emissions but what happens when the car dies? You can’t get rid of the battery. So what’s worse? Having a truck that gives off a smell that you don’t like or destroying the planet with batteries that just decompose and cause more damage? Diesels are used for almost everything. There is no way we can survive without them.

Kinja'd!!! Mdsinger2 > shop-teacher

Kinja'd!!!7

You say these things in an anecdotal sense. I get your frustration with “coal rollers” but I have a ram 3500 that I have gutted the emissions crap out of. And it’s not to dump black smoke (which is just unburnt fuel). The reason is quite the opposite. My ram now getd 28 mpg (18mpg while towing my 10k lbs fifth wheel) which is drastically better for the environment than before the “delete” which was 15mpg and 9mpg towing. The only thing the emissions equipment does is force the use of an exhaust gas filter which gets clogged up with soot. The addition of DEF is only to keep that filter cleaner, longer, by removing the soot from the filter and guess where it ends up? Out the tail pipe. I get that there are plenty of Jack assess out there rolling coal (they all seem to find me when I'm driving my Prius) but there is actually a good reason to remove the emissions bullshit added to these trucks

I wish it had been a late model F250 in Regen mode. You haven’t experienced the white cloud of death and that’s too bad. Your mini soap box would’ve collapsed.

Do you have any idea how much more a Prius takes to be disposed of? I’m talking about disposal batteries, the energy it takes to charge them (coal) , it has to come from somewhere. It’s immensely more damaging for the environment.

Unwrap the cotton wool. You sound ridiculous and it’s obvious you don’t have any actual life experience with anything diesel. By the way, my 07 3/4 ton pre emissions turbo  diesel gets 26mpg. You’re welcome.

Sorry to break it to you, driving cars as long as you can, by maintaining them, is way more environmentally friendly than producing a new battery powered vehicle. Especially Old ‘dirty’ diesels. Many can drive millions of miles. Battery production and reclamation are two of the most polluting processes there is. Oh, a nd get used to coal for the Long haul, we are the Saudi Arabia of Coal. DEF is not good for the environment. That is a complete  lie that using DEF is cleaner burning. People  remove  DEF because  of the negative  side effects  its causes and because  DEF  severely  effects  the efficiency of a Diesel engine. BTW. keep this in mind they do not monitor  the emissions  coming  out of the tail pipe on a diesel  engine  like they do with a gas engine.  That means  they don't  test Co2 levels.that means  they aren't even testing  to see if DEF engines are clear or not.

There was a time, back in the Neanderthal age (our was it Pleistocene), when i was mere child living in a corner house with a small island across the street just long enough for a bus stop. This little triangular piece of real estate was a bus stop. I loved the smell of diesels back then. Diesels don’t smell like it did years ago....... Today’s NYC metro buses have diesel particulate filters and pipe exhaust above the bus roof top to prevent followers from being puffed. Much cleaner exhaust with zero visible soot.

Diesels are the last polluters and owners resent it but it was coming as the EPA mandated it. It's just a matter of time when illegal diesel exhaust removal on new engines are fined. Older diesels will simply remain unless legislation forces older diesels into compliance.

I love the libtards diesel will never go away from i n our life time. I don't say that just because I'm a diesel mechanic. In the grand scheme those old Diesel trucks can run for a lifetime and not create as much pollution as it takes to build a hybrid and electric cars just won't work in some places I have to drive 200 miles to get to the next bigest town and Winter lasts darn near 7 months a Tesla would be the last thing I would want to deal with out here at -45F and if a new pickup to replace my 1993 2 ton wasn't so damn expensive to buy I might get one but I would also lose close to 30% of the fuel economy my old Diesel gets and the cost of ownership would be 10x of my old truck it doesn't make sense in the least to replace a functional vehicle to help dry the tears of snowflakes. Look at the real cost and the impact it would have on the people that produce the food you stuff in your face before making stupid assumptions based on preconceived ideas when you have no real world experience in the matter come out to the ranch some time and try to feed the heard at -40F in what is essentially a Prius I'll tell you right now it's not happening. So I'll keep driving my old truck and continue to get 28mpg in a 2 ton while you falsely believe your hybrid is doing so much better for the world. Restricting planned parenthood’s family planning services and free birth control, and sex education in our schools merely creates more burdens of the state...and by restricting those pregnant females who legitimately do not want a child from having an abortion creates another burden on the state!

I certainly don’t feel that abortion should be a method of birth control, and in most cases where someone finds themselves in the predicament of an unwanted pregnancy they should offer the child for adoption. But there are pregnant women, especially young ones, who have no money, no food, unsupportive families, they might be drug addicts, or alcoholics...and they will make a burden of the state if they're not able to abort.

Hey you don't like old diesel trucks fine don't buy one. You want to better the biosphere don't buy anything at all because every car and truck on the globe produces the same amount of pollution a year as only 15 container ships.  760million cars and trucks pollute the same as 15 ships. But no it's ok throw a fit about some guy with an old pickup because that's going to fix everything right? Remember every penny you spend on products shipped from overseas is money in the pockets of shipping companies who have bought their way out of global emission regulation using your money.

What a tool the writer is.

Wat do you think charges up your EV? Coal!

And the soot that comes from diesels is not polution, it is a biproduct of combustion.  Also of which gasoline vehicles have the same, you just can't see it.  Also, battery capacity can drop by over 60% what exposed to freezing conditions.  So guess what?  Your Tesla ain't goin nowhere in any quick amount of time.

But it isn’t smelly either, and makes zero smoke. That’s just bad tuning, maybe intentionally so.

One thing that always seems to get swept under the rug and ignored is mining for cobalt and lithium to make batteries. Diesels might stink occasionally depending on the year and modifications. But most modern combustion engine vehicles on the road today are quite clean. Whereas open pit mines for making batteries are as detrimental to the environment as harvesting crude oil. Personally I think the future is in biofuels and hydrogen. One being renewable and the other being the most plentiful atom in the universe.

If we invested more in biofuels, then gas cars could run on methanol, which is the simplest form of alcohol containing only one carbon atom. Diesels could run on damn near anything, as they use compression ignition. Add a water-methanol injection system to a diesel and it runs super clean. The water reduces the exhaust temperature and cools the intake. While the methanol helps to burn 100% of the fuel in the combustion cycle. Normal diesels only burn 65-75% of the fuel in combustion, hence the soot and smoke. Those guys rolling coal are running a rich fuel mixture upon injection, and probably only burning 50-60% of it and wasting the rest in smoke.

It only takes a little searching and reading to find out about all this. This article just happened to pop up in my recommended stories on google for some reason. So I decided to leave a post.

Can’t wait for the day your battery powered car is 300 miles from the nearest charging station and the batteries die, I really hate when other people want to tell everyone what they should do. Do you realize your electric/hybrid car is delivered to the dealership by a diesel truck? Also most everything you use/consume is delivered either by a diesel truck or diesel train

I have a 1995 2500 Cummins . The old 12 valve was a great engine they were the greatest engine ever made for more reasons than I care to list they were intercooled and because it didn’t use glow plugs are 2 big ones for me. they only had one flaw , the death pin that could fall out and ruin the engine and the toxic smog can be smelled even in the cab. the smell is really getting to me in my old 12v . I don’t remember any of the 7.3 turbo diesels I have owned smelling this bad, or even the 6.9 , heck even the garbage 6.2s or the 6.5s I drove in the Army. The 2 smelliest in my opinion are the Detroit’s 2 cycles and the old Cummins, maybe because they were intended to be heavy equipment engines. I do know one thing, if my life depended on having a reliable, easy to work on engine , it would be a Cummins or a detroit. I recently started a detroit parked in the edge of a swamp , uncovered in Northern Wisconsin. Started right up after 10 years. The diesel phase of my life is over, unless I am buying a piece of equipment like a skidsteer or a backhoe, today’s diesels , with added cost of def urine and considering diesel is almost always 30 percent higher cancelling out any added gains in economy are not worth the gain you get pulling. Add in that diesels are 30 percent more expensive to maintain, the only people who should own them are ho t shot drivers and people pulling heavy loads, long distance all the time. The old diesels will not be around forever like some of you claim, they do use them in Cummins and Detroit swaps in a variety of cool ways but these swaps ate usually in sunday drivers. I am an avid reader of this forum, most of you are experts and for that reason I never put in my 2 cents, until now . I hate to sell my Cummins, she is really reliable but way to smelly. Reminds me of a girl I dated in Mcmurdo station Antarctica, she even liked the backdoor action, just to smelly.

Seems like you shouldn’t be checking your tire pressure at McD’s?

As someone who owned a 2004 Diesel and used it heavily,

The real issue isn’t pre-emissions diesels, the issue is dipshits tuning them to run excessively rich and dipshits not keeping them running properly. My 04 had all it’s emissions equipment deleted, yet it never smoked nor smelled obnoxiously, and it pulled 24+ mpg hwy.

Don't know why all electric vehicle people are pushing so hard for these inefficient environment polluting batteries and you still have to charge them off the grid. You ignore the most efficient clean burning engine out there. Very cheap to make fuel for it as well and will produce as much torque as a gas engine. But, all of you Al Gore dupped people won't even look at a hydrogen burning engine that the emission is water and 100%ore efficient than your battery powered vehicle.

There’s that old saying “those that can not do... teach” you fantasize that you’d like to hit him in the face with a shovel, but like life you can’t. Oh sure, its physically possible that you could but let’s face it... it’s you, a shop teacher, so you wont, you can’t. All you can do is to jump on someone else’s rant and about someone else driving an eco friendly vehicle and getting a yeast infection from the exhaust fumes from a vehicle 10' away from his. As much of a pussy he sounds, shop teacher, your whining is like a whimpering bitch (no reference to women here, actually comparing you to a female dog crying). Perhaps the issue that millenials have is that their intestinal fortitude that traditionally was reinforced by persons in their life “like their shop teacher” have been taught that being a coward but in a large group will give you the emotional support to declare a safe space where you can attempt to force your ideology on to everyone else and if they disagree then label them falsely to get more bitches to hop on your misguided bandwagon .

Well, unfortunately there are Coal Rolling ass holes like me that that laugh at you as you fail miserably in your safe space, and at your fantasies of having the balls to physically confront someone that irritates you. I probably am not “ that guy in your Neighborhood” , but it’s a safe assumption that should you build up enough gumption to act out your fantasy with your shovel, remember our big, smelly, obnoxious diesel trucks are not GUN FREE ZONES. And initiating a violent confrontation with a shovel is no different than doing it with any other potentially lethal weapon... and since I started this response with an age old quote, let me finish here with one as well “never bring a shovel to a gun fight”.

Well the McDonalds was right there and given I’m a sentient meat sandwich, it’s nice for me to visit my relatives... even weird old Auntie Filet-O-Fish!

In this case though, it was a 7.3 Powerstroke probably from he mid-2000s and the issue was the owner needlessly leaving it running combined with an exhaust pipe exiting to he passenger side to my direction.

And it’s interesting how so many are making fuel economy claims about diesels that I never actually disputed.

I just don't like the wasteful and needless idling... combined with the lax emissions the older diesels had.
